How Paul's Thorn in the Flesh Is Used to Teach Against Belief in Divine Healing
The Weak Prayer for Divine Healing
The book, Christ The Healer, by F.F. Bosworth, is one of the best books I've ever read on divine healing and it is a book that has helped many people understand the Bible's teachings on this important question of Christianity. F.F. Bosworth was given a ministry of healing against which many spoke, including those who called themselves Christian who, for whatever reasons, did not want the truth of God's word on divine healing to be spread. Among the teachings against healing that were put forth are those that attempt to use the apostle Paul's thorn in the flesh as biblical evidence that it's God's will for some people to remain sick and never receive healing. It is easier, after all, to pray, "God heal me--if it be your will." Praying in this manner covers the one who asks without faith and understanding. If he doesn't receive healing, he can chalk it up to it not being God's will instead of dealing with why so many are not being healed by the God that they call a healer.
Was Paul's Thorn in the Flesh a Sickness?
F.F. Bosworth authoritatively deals with this question in his book, Christ the Healer, and allows scripture to destroy all thought that the apostle was sick and that God refused to heal him. First, he points out that "thorn in the flesh" is not ever seen in the scriptures as a reference to sickness of any kind, physical or mental. He points out that in the scripture of Numbers 23:55, the "thorns" in the sides of Israel were not sickness and disease, but people, namely the inhabitants of the land of Canaan who caused Israel trouble. It reads, "But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall come to pass that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell."
This man of God also points to the scripture of Joshua 23:13 which reads, "Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you. But, they shall be snares and traps unto you and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you." Again, it's not difficult to see that the "thorns" of which the scriptures speak have nothing to do with being ill. Don't people nowadays still say, "he is a thorn in my side?" They aren't saying that they're sick, but rather that they are vexed--two very different things.
So, what was the apostle Paul's thorn in the flesh? We don't have to guess at the answer because it's plainly revealed in scripture. II Corinthians 12:7 records Paul's words when he said, "And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of
Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure." Paul's thorn in the flesh was a messenger or angel (demon) of Satan who caused him constant trouble, affliction, and tribulation. He enumerates his troubles in II Corinthians 11:23-27. Just as it is important to teach the whole of what God's word has to say on the subject of divine healing, it's equally important to show how the scriptures destroy the erroneous teaching that Paul's thorn in the flesh was a sickness from which he was not healed in an attempt to prevent people from truly knowing
Christ as healer.
