Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The definition of the biblical word manna is largely unknown even among Christians. However, the definition appears in the New and Old Testaments of the Bible. Heavenly manna was a food that God miraculously supplied for the nation of Israel during her journey through the wilderness after being freed from slavery in Egypt. What kind of food was this manna from heaven? What did it look like?
"And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, 'It is manna', for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, 'This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat'" (KJV, Exodus 16:14-15).
What did manna from heaven taste like? Again, scripture answers this question. Exodus 16:31 informs that, "...The house of Israel called the name thereof manna and it was like coriander seed, white. And the taste of it was like wafers made with honey." The Bible offers the best definition of manna. It was a bread that God sent from heaven to feed His people in the wilderness. This reminds of the New Testament teachings affirming that Jesus is the bread of life. Heavenly manna tasted like wafers made with honey and like coriander seed.
The Old Testament focuses on the tangible heavenly manna that Israel consumed in order to stay alive while waiting to continue the journey to the Promised Land. The New Testament focuses on the spiritual manna that God still provides for His people. His people are spiritual Israel, now composed of the descendants of those who ate physical heavenly manna in the wilderness and those whose ancestors don't belong to natural Israel (Romans 2:28-29). What is the spiritual manna of which the New Testament speaks? What does it look and taste like? How is it obtained and eaten?
The passage of St. John 6:31-36 reads, "Our fathers did eat manna in the desert as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' Then Jesus said unto them, 'Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven, (it came from heaven, but Moses isn't the one who sent it) but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, 'Lord, evermore give us this bread.' And Jesus said unto them. 'I am the bread of life.'"
The scriptures make it plain that Jesus is spiritual manna from heaven. Only those who saw Him when He walked on Earth really know what He physically looked like. The only thing today's Christians know is that he wasn't handsome (Isaiah 53:1-2). This spiritual manna which is still being consumed today does have a taste. Scripture teaches that Jesus is the living Word of God and also God Himself who was made flesh (St. John 1:1,14). The Savior taught that belief on Him is in itself the eating of spiritual manna that's far superior to the Old Testament manna that could only give temporary life. He said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread (heavenly manna) of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven..." (St. John 6:47-51).
Physical heavenly manna tasted like wafers made with honey. Psalm 19:7-10 records that the law (word) of God is sweeter than honey. Obviously, even true believers in Jesus must face natural death. However, according to scripture, physical death doesn't end one's existence (Hebrews 9:27). Although some people live most of their life believing that to be put 6 feet under is to cease to exist, most of these same individuals are keenly aware of their doubts when their time to leave this world approaches.
What does it mean to believe on Jesus? Does a dictionary of the English language define belief in the same manner as the biblical scriptures? No, it does not.
