Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
While it's a good thing to desire to lead a life that is pleasing to God, it's also important to be aware of the disdain, disapproval, and sometimes the pure hatred that you will invite from others who despise the righteousness of God. A preacher once said that if someone's life is truly pleasing to the Lord, yet that person is liked by everyone, he or she just might not be a servant of Jesus of Nazareth whom many hated without a cause (St. John 15:25 ). The savior warned his disciples when he said to them, "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake..." (KJV, St. Matthew 10:22). I believe this is one of the reasons why Christ said to his followers, "A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another" (St. John 13:34). How sad it is for love to be lacking among those who call themselves brothers and sisters in Christ. The Bible speaks to those who claim to love God, yet cannot love his servants who serve him in his name. 1 John 4:20-21 reads, "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God love his brother also."
This message is not intended to dissuade anyone from devotion to God; it is meant to inform because part of the reason for which some Christians have backsliden has to do with their lack of knowledge of God's word which is so seldom understood; therefore, the meat of God's word is seldom taught. Consequently, confusion, disappointment, and finally, anger set in. How often are baby Christians (new believers) introduced to the words of Jesus when he said, "And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?"(St. Luke 14:27-31).
Devotion to God is beautiful, but not always easy. God promises to keep his servants who keep his will, who walk with Jesus when they are praised and who walk with Jesus when they are sharply criticized for adhering to God's word regardless of whether that means going against the "norm," the modern, the popular, and the well liked. Pleasing God is the whole life of the true body of Christ. The apostle Paul asked the Galatian believers, "For do I now persuade men or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ" (Galatians 1:10).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
