Scripture of The Day - 1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
What Did Jesus Look Like?
The question, "What did Jesus look like?" has been asked by numerous people regardless of their beliefs about the Son of God. There are biblical passages that deal with the topic and guide people whose eyes never saw the Savior in how to handle their curiosity and how not to handle it. Many, including Christians, are surprised to learn that such scriptures even exist.
What Did Jesus Look Like According to Scripture?
People who are unfamiliar with what it means to truly study the Bible will not recognize the many different words used to refer to a single thing, person, concept, or truth. For example, one of the names for Christ is the "arm of the Lord." The scripture of Isaiah 53:1-2 reads, "Who hath believed our report (preaching)? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. He hath no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him."
What are the images of Jesus that come to mind after reading this passages in Isaiah? Although there is no physical description given to answer the question, "What did Jesus look like?," the reader is told in plain language that he was not physically handsome or appealing in any way. There is a lesson in this very truth for all who worship physical beauty--the world's Savior wasn't physically beautiful. Jesus emphasized the need for his disciples to know what he looks like spiritually, not in the literal sense of what his appearance is in the spirit realm; that has already been revealed in scripture, but rather what he should look like to all of his followers. This is evidenced in the way he answered Philip who said to him, "...Lord, shew (show) us the Father..." (St. John 14:8). In St. John 14:9, Christ answered, "...Have I been so long time with you and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. And how sayest thou then, Shew me the Father?"
It should be remembered that the scripture of Isaiah refers to the physical appearance of Jesus, the Word (God) made flesh, who lived on Earth, not to the appearance that he had before coming to Earth and to which he has returned forever. The revelation of his spiritual appearance appears in the appropriately named book of the
Bible--Revelation, in chapter 1, verses 14 thru 16. The description of Christ in this passage is one of a very frightening, majestic, and all powerful being that literally caused the apostle John who had been banished to the isle of Patmos, to faint.
Should Images of Jesus Be Made?
First, rarely are images of Jesus in his glory ever made; they tend to be images of him, purely according to man's imagination, as he appeared when he walked the Earth. The apostle Paul explained in Acts 17:29 that, "Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold or silver or stone graven by art and man's device (imagination)." The word "offspring" of God does not have the same biblical definition as "children" of God used in other passages. The point Paul made was that crafting images based on imagination in no way answers the question, "What did
Jesus look like?" In fact, there are strong biblical warnings against such practices.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
