Scripture of The Day - 1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Lukewarm Christianity According to the Book of Revelation
In the third chapter and sixteenth verse of the book of Revelation the words of Jesus when he spoke to the church at Laodicea are, "I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot. I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spue (spew) thee out of my mouth." This is one of numerous biblical passages that speak of the spiritual danger of lukewarm Christianity; nevertheless, it is one of the least mentioned and is seldom taken seriously.
Lukewarm Christianity in the Mouth of God
When people drink water, they prefer it to be either cold to quench their thirst or hot and used to make tea or some other beverage. They don't enjoy drinking lukewarm water which doesn't serve to quench thirst or to make tea or coffee; therefore, it isn't difficult to imagine why someone would spew water at this temperature out of his or her mouth. It isn't at all appealing. Spiritual truths are often understood better when compared to their "counterparts" in the natural.
Morris Cerullo, in his book, "End Time Prophecy Revelation Unveiled," taught a message that's long overdue and that needs to be repeated until it is actually heard. He did an excellent job of expounding on the topic of the lukewarm church when he wrote, "Our cities today are filled with Laodicean churches. These churches pride themselves with their large attendance Sunday after Sunday. They have a tremendous Sunday School program; they have a well-trained choir; they have a youth program; they have an outreach into their community; but, their works are neither hot nor cold. Men and women sit in their pews Sunday after Sunday needing deliverance, guidance, healing...."
Is Cerullo's understanding of the words of Jesus concerning lukewarm Christianity correct? It can certainly be checked against the words of Jesus in the scripture that immediately follows where he tells that he will spew the lukewarm church out of his mouth. That passage is in chapter 3, verse 17 of the book of Revelation. The Lord warned, "Because thou sayest, I am rich and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked." Cerullo reminds of the wealth in the region of Laodicea of those times; at the same time, the reader is reminded of the wealth of some of the large churches to which thousands of people who identify themselves as Christians belong--people who can't answer basic questions about what it really means to follow Christ.
A "baby" Christian (new convert/believer) will not understand the biblical symbolism of the passage in the book of Revelation and in other passages of the Bible. Nevertheless, it doesn't require an immediate, in-depth understanding to comprehend that when
Jesus spoke of lukewarm Christianity and the truth that he will spew the lukewarm church out of his mouth, he was not speaking of a good thing.
