Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Many who remain out of fellowship with God claim that they are disillusioned with Christianity having seen the widespread and shameful hypocrisy of those who call themselves followers of Christ. Sadly, many who identify themselves as Christians have displayed behavior that isn't even remotely considered moral or ethical by the majority and much less scriptural. While it's understandable that people would become disinterested in receiving the gospel because of the actions of those who have supposedly already received, God's word doesn't excuse persistent rejection of Jesus based on anything.
Some of the same people who've seen the destruction that smoking, drinking and drugs cause, continue to desire to try and test them for themselves. Numerous and fatal mistakes have been made by medical doctors, yet the average person continues to trust his life to his doctor. Airplane, train and automobile accidents occur on a regular basis, claiming many lives in tragedy, but people continue to travel for business and pleasure. Divorce is prevalent in the United States and many other nations of the world, but most people remain determined to find their prince charming or princess with whom to spend the rest of their life. Many new businesses fail each year, yet millions continue yearning and working to become entrepreneurs. The list could go on and on.
Each individual knows the honest answer to why he or she turns a deaf ear to God's call to repentance. Is it really because of the behavior of someone else who claimed to be a Christian or is that "reason" just an excuse to continue ignoring God? God says to every individual to try him and see that he's good. This means that each individual is to try God for himself. The scripture of Psalm 34:8 says, "O taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man that trusteth in him."
The scripture doesn't say to guess whether the Lord is good, but rather to taste for oneself because it is the Lord to whom everyone will give an account for himself, not for anyone else, in the day of judgment. Will he tell Christ that he didn't believe him because he saw other men claim to believe who didn't live Christian lives? The Bible has already responded to this form of reasoning. The unbelief of others has nothing to do with the veracity of God. Will the fact that some don't believe make God untrue? The New Testament scripture of Romans 3:3-4 warns, "for what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid. Yea, let God be true and every man a liar..."
