God The Harsh Father, Jesus The Gentle Lord?

In spite of the many years during which numerous Christian church goers have faithfully attended Sunday school and Bible studies, very few can scripturally help those who understandably view God the Father as harsh and God the Son as gentle.

The study of the Old Testament shadows and types of Christ can be confusing and time consuming for those new to the Christian faith and/or who lack the fundamentals of the doctrine of Christ. Fortunately, it's not necessary to carry out such a study to at least be able to grasp a basic understanding of the oneness of God the Father and God the Son that clears up a serious misunderstanding.

Most people are familiar with the biblical account of the exodus of the Israelites out of the bondage of Egypt. In summary, Pharaoh's army pursued Israel even as they crossed on the dry land of the parted Sea that God divided for them. Exodus 15:8-9, 10-11 records, "and with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together. The floods stood upright as an heap and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea. Thou didst blow with thy wind. The sea covered them. They (the Egyptians) sank as lead in the mighty waters. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?"

Exodus 15:6 sheds more light on this work of the Lord, revealing to the reader that the wonder was performed by God's right hand as it's written that, "thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power. Thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.

The above example is one of a huge number of biblical accounts of the severe punishment and judgment that fell on those who persisted in rebellion against God. They did not escape the vengeance, ferocity, and severity of his right hand.

The scripture of Romans 8:34 reveals that it is Jesus who is the right hand of God. It says, "it is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God." The Christian Bible also says that, "Christ sitteth on the right hand of God (Colossians 3:1). Jesus' position indicates his authority. When someone says that he'll have his "right hand" do such and such, he is referring to a person that shares authority and power with him.

Simply put, Christ Jesus is the same right hand of God that did mighty works in Old Testament times. The Father did these works by and through his right hand, God the Son. Later, notice that in the New Testament, the reader sees that the Son teaches his followers saying, "...the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me...(St. John 14:10-11).

It should be evident that the meek and humble Lamb is also the mighty and harsh right hand of God seen in the Old Testament. Does he appear gentle in those times? It's no less evident that the "harsh" and "severe" Father is also the performer of countless works of incredible mercy and gentleness by his same right hand who came to Earth in the flesh to be sacrificed at Calvary for man's salvation. Does the Father appear harsh in these times?

Jesus plainly taught that he and the Father are one. This is not saying that God is one "person", but that the three persons of God are always and forever of one mind and on one accord. Scripture even gives an insight into the irritation and frustration of Christ when his apostles asked him to show them the Father. In St. John 14:9 he responded, "have I been so long time with you and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. And how sayest thou then, shew us the Father?"

When one looks at Jesus, he looks at the fullness of the Godhead which includes the Father in his harshness and severity and in his mercy and gentleness (Colossians 2:9).
