Astrology And The Horoscope: Spiritual Danger And Deception
What Is Astrology? And What Is The Danger?
Astrology refers to the study of how heavenly bodies, primarily the stars, affect our behavior. The horoscope is based on astrology. While this might sound harmless, there is great deception and spiritual danger in astrology and the horoscope, which is why God's Word has forbidden its practice. The Christian Bible issues a serious warning against trusting in astrologers, and reveals the ultimate fate that awaits practitioners of astrology, also known as stargazers. We read, "...Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticastors, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stuble. The fire shall burn them. They shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame..." (Isaiah 47:13-14). The biblical passage of Deuteronomy 18:10-12 also reveals that such practices are abominable to God. Whenever we do anything that is abominable in God's eyes, we are in grave spiritual and physical danger, which can lead to an untimely physical death. We've just read what happened to the astrologers in the Isaiah 47:13-14 passage. While astrologers' interest might be focused primarily on stars and other heavenly bodies, the whole purpose of the art--which is part of the occult--is to seek wisdom and to know the future through guidance by celestial bodies. Therefore, astrologers can also be known by other names such as soothsayers and observers of times among others. Soothsayers and observers also seek to know the future without consulting God. The Deuteronomy 18 passage forcefully condemns such practices.
But Where Is The Deception In Astrology And The Horoscope?
Many people understandably think the profiles of the various signs of the zodiac are accurate. That would mean it's true that we are born under the influence of a specific constellation. And if that constellation has the power to dictate our personality, why would it not have the power to predict our future? This is why astrologers write the horoscope. But now, let's unmask the great lie that astrology and the horoscope are by considering the profiles of a couple of signs of the zodiac.
According to astrology, it's very important to Virgos to control everything around them. They are perfectionists and very responsible. Now then, when a Virgo who is a perfectionist reads this, he thinks there's legitimacy in the horoscope. That the stars can be trusted as a source of wisdom. He could not be more mistaken. Plenty of Virgos are NOT perfectionists. As for being responsible, millions of people are responsible, and they are not Virgos. And who doesn't want to control his life? That's nothing unique to being a Virgo. We all want control of our own life. A large part of the deception in astrology and the horoscope is the lie that the stars dictate personality and behavior.
And then there's the profile of Taurus the Bull. They're said to be stubborn, but loyal, pleasant, courteous, tender and kind. If astrology is truly trustworthy, it should never fail. However, it fails miserably when we attempt to apply it's "truths" universally. For example, millions of people are stubborn, and they were not all born under the sign of Taurus the Bull. In the Bible we read, "And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people." (Exodus 32:9). "Stiffnecked" means stubborn. God is saying the entire nation was stubborn. Now we know not everyone in the nation was born a Taurus the Bull. Therefore, the stubbornness factor associated with Taurus applies to millions of people regardless of birth sign.
And let's remember that a Taurus is supposed to be kind, tender and pleasant. Well, guess what? Adolph Hitler was a Taurus. Enough said about the so-called accuracy of astrology and the horoscope. With good reason we should be frightened to put our trust in such a flawed and deceptive system that deceives everyone who trusts in it. Forget what the horoscope predicts for "your" sign. Only God knows the future, which is why we read, "Ye know NOT what shall be on the morrow (tomorrow)." (James 4:14).
No One Is Born Under The Influence Of A Sign Of The Zodiac
Another part of the great deception in astrology and the horoscope says that we are all born under the influence of a particular sign of the zodiac such as Taurus, Virgo, Aries, Gemini, Sagittarius, etc. No. What the Bible tells us is that we are born under something called the "sin nature". This is why king David said, "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me." (Psalm 51:5).
David is referring to when he was in the womb, not to any sin his mother committed such as fornication or adultery, which was not the case with his birth. He's explaining that he was born a sinner. He says nothing about a sign of the zodiac in reference to what type of man he was. We see the same being explained by the apostle Paul who spoke of an evil force against which he had to battle constantly. We read, "For I know in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing. For to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good I would, I do not. But the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin." (Romans 7:18-21, 24-25).
There we have it. Sin, NOT a sign of the zodiac, is the law under which we are born. And the only escape from that law is obedience to Christ.
Astrology and the horoscope are a great lie and spiritual danger in that they lure people into trusting in their "heavenly wisdom". This angers the Lord who tells us in no uncertain terms that He is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5, 34:14). Yes, it is a serious thing to knowingly provoke the jealous Lord to anger by consulting the stars instead of Him. King Saul made the mistake of consulting a witch (witches believe in astrology). He did so, because God would no longer answer him. But God ceased to answer him, because he would not obey the Lord's voice. One day, he was distraught, and consulted a witch, knowing the seriousness of his sin. What happened to king Saul? Before we find out, we need to know what a familiar spirit is. A familiar spirit is an evil spirit, a demon or devil that possess soothsayers, witches, warlocks, wizards, mediums, and other practitioners of the occult. Familiar spirits are at work in seances and any "predictions" of the future that do not come through prophecy by God. Returning to the question of what happened to king Saul, we should know that the witch he consulted had a familiar spirit. We read, "So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it; and inquired not of the Lord. Therefore he slew him..." (1 Chronicals 10:13-14).
Let us not make the grave mistake of consulting the stars, or other heavenly bodies, or familiar spirits instead of consulting God. And when the Lord answers us, we must receive His answer, and obey...which king Saul failed to do, and died because of it.
