Satan As an Angel of Light: Christians, Beware
Just as it is true that not all that glitters is gold, so it is true that not all that looks or sounds Christian is truly of Christ. When it comes to spiritual deception, one of the most important truths we'd do well to keep in mind is the Scripture of 2 Corinthians 11:15, which warns, "...Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness..."
Think about it. The prince of darkness can appear as an angel of light. Likewise, the ministers, or agents, of that prince can appear as ministers of righteousness.
Beware of Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
Consider what the wicked king Herod said to the wise men who had arrived in Jerusalem in search of the infant or toddler Jesus for whom they had gifts. We read, "Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child. And when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also." (Matthew 2:7-8)
We'd think that king Herod himself is interested in becoming a follower of Christ. However, he only speaks of worshiping Christ in order to deceive the wise men whose intentions are pure. We know this for a fact, because we read, "And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. Then Herod, when he saw he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem." (Matthew 2:12, 16) Herod's intentions from the beginning were to locate Jesus as a young child and kill Him. Let us not forget that this same wicked man spoke of worshiping Christ only to get information he wanted to carry out a diabolical plan. To this day, there are millions with the spirit of king Herod. They hate Christ, but their words sound Christian. Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing.
They Even Tried to Deceive Jesus
Luke 20:20-23 says, "And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar or not? But he perceived their craftiness....
The passage we've just read lets us know people tried to deceive the Lord. Why would we think they wouldn't try to deceive the Lord's followers? That is one of the reasons the Lord says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him" (St. John 13:16).
And He says, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." (Matthew 7:15).
"Behold I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." (Matthew 10:16).
Questions to Ponder
1. Can you think of any other examples in the Bible of people attempting to deceive God's people? Did they succeed? Why or why not?
2.
Does God still speak to us through dreams like he did in the case of the wise men?
