Does God Speak through Dreams? What Does the Christian Bible Say?
Some "Christian" ministers and preachers scold their flocks for even entertaining the idea that God speaks to them through dreams. "God has not spoken anything to you through a dream!" they shout. They then attempt to show that their belief is correct according to the scripture of Hebrews 1:1-2. That scripture reads, "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son." They claim this is how we know to answer "No" to the question: Does God speak through dreams? They say God speaks only through His Son in these last days. However, the Bible does NOT restrict God's dealings with people through dreams to the Old Testament. One thing we need to know in order to see this truth in scripture is that "night visions" is another term the Bible will use virtually interchangeably for dreams. Both visions and dreams indicate consciousness on another plane where voluntarily or involuntarily a person sees and / or hears images anytime during the day or night. That's why the term "daydream" exists for day visions. It's understood dreams occur at night, so they are also known as "night visions" in the Bible. Let's prove this through Old and New Testament scripture.
Night Visions Are Dreams
The scripture of Daniel 4:5 says, "I saw a dream which made me afraid. And the thoughts upon my bed and the visions troubled me." We see here that the visions he had were his dream. And his dream consisted of his visions.
We also read, "In the first year of Belshazzar, king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed. Then he wrote the dream" (Daniel 7:1). Again, we plainly see scripture calling visions a dream, and a dream visions. As you continue reading in this seventh chapter of Daniel, you see that in verse 13 he says, "I saw in the night visions..." Again, here is our scriptural evidence that night visions are dreams, and that dreams are night visions. Now then, does God speak through dreams or night visions in the New Testament?
Matthew 1:20, which is a New Testament scripture says, "The Lord appeared unto him in a dream."
Now then, we might say let's discard Matthew 1:20, because though it's New Testament, the Son of God has not yet been born at that point. Okay. That's fine. Let's move to the New Testament scriptures showing how God does speak through dreams AFTER the birth of Jesus. We read, "Being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way." This is in reference to the wise men who were warned by God in a dream AFTER the birth of Jesus. After worshiping the baby Savior, it was their intention to return to Herod and tell him where the baby was. Now let's argue that we should discard this scripture also, because Jesus is a baby at this point. He has not yet given us His teachings. Fine. Let us therefore now skip to a point after Jesus has fulfilled His ministry, after He has taught. We read, "And a vision appeared to Paul in the night." Remember that a vision in the night is a night vision or dream, as we've already seen in scripture above. "There stood a man of Macedonia and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them" (Acts 16:9). The very next verse (10) let's us know they got up and went to Macedonia, convinced that is what the Lord had told them to do through the dream or night vision.
We also read, "Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace. For I am with thee" (Acts 18:9-10). This time, the Lord appears to Paul in a dream or night vision to encourage him to press on. The apostle Paul was going through an extremely hard time of opposition. And the Lord saw his need for encouragement.
Now then, let's play devil's advocate just once more. Let's say that just because Paul had night visions or dreams sent by God doesn't mean any believer is spoken to by God through dreams. After all, Paul was an apostle. The Bible says there are only 12 apostles with whom Jesus dealt with in a special way, unlike the rest of us. While it is true that the apostles have a unique place and role in the kingdom of heaven, when it comes to dreams, you don't have to be an apostle for God to speak to you in night visions. What's more is the Bible clearly says God speaks through dreams even in the last days, which are New Testament times. Have we forgotten the scripture of Acts 2:17? It says, "In the LAST DAYS, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. And your young men shall see visions. And your old men shall dream DREAMS." The Lord Himself said to continue paying attention to the visions and dreams He'll send in these last days under the New Testament. By the time of the Acts of the apostles, not only has Jesus come and taught us, He is risen. He has returned to heaven, yet He continues to deal with His people through day and night visions or dreams. Does God speak through dreams? Yes! And we'd do well to heed what He says to us in those day or night visions, which are dreams.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
