Revelations, Visions, Secrets and Lies in the Book of Enoch
The Enoch Who Walked With God Compared to the Enoch of the Apocryphal Book
Genesis 5:24 says, "Enoch walked with God, and he was not; for God took him."
The Scripture we've just read prompts many people to assume that the main character of the apocryphal book of Enoch is a righteous man. They believe he's the same Enoch who walked with God. Therefore, according to them, we should consider the book of Enoch--a book of the apocrypha--as much a part of God's Word as we do Genesis. They say we should be guided by its revelations, visions and secrets. Is this correct? No, it is not. And the shocking truth about the book of Enoch jumps out at us by comparing its scriptures with those of the Bible. Keep in mind that if we're talking about the same Enoch, we should also be talking about the same God. In other words, if the Enoch of the book of Enoch is the Enoch of Genesis, the God of the book of Enoch should be the same God of the book of Genesis. If that's the case, the book of Enoch should not contradict the Bible in any way.
Let's take a look at Enoch 9:1-3, which says, "Then Michael and Gabriel and Surjan and Urjan looked down from heaven and saw the great amount of blood which had been spilled on the earth... And they said to one another, 'The emptied earth re-echoes the sound of their (mankind's) cries up to the gates of heaven...' And they said, 'And now to you, O ye holy ones of heaven, cry the souls of men, saying, Secure us judgment before the Most High...'"
What we've just read in the book of Enoch is in sharp contrast with what we read in the Bible. Verses five and seven of Genesis, chapter six say, "And God saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth... And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created."
No scripture of the Bible says figures named Michael, Gabriel, etc. saw man's wickedness on earth. By the way, Michael and the other three figures are angels, also known as Watchers who are sons of heaven (Enoch 6:2). Could it be that Genesis simply left out this information? We don't think so, given that the same passage in Enoch teaches a doctrine contrary to the gospel of Jesus of Nazareth. According to the passage of Enoch 9:1-3, mankind made supplications to holy men of heaven, asking them to take their cause before the Most High. The Bible does not say that. What's more is in no part of the Bible do we see God's servants praying to the saints of heaven to take their cause before the Lord. To do such is to turn that spirit or figure into a mediator between God and mankind. Whoever does that commits a grave sin, and is deceived.
The Bible says Christ is the only Mediator between God the Father and man. First Timothy 2:5 says: "There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." Also, Jesus Himself plainly told us to pray to the Father. Directly to the Father. Christ said, "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven..." (Matthew 6:9). What's more is that Christ Himself told us to pray in His name. We read, "If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it" (St. John 14:14).
The simple fact that the book of Enoch tells lies by telling us that men on earth pray to holy men and angels, asking them to take their cause before God, we know something is very wrong. We know we should not trust in its revelations, visions and secrets. Are we to believe that the Enoch of the Bible didn't pray to God? We're told he walked with God (Gen. 5:24). He could not have walked with God if he didn't even pray to God. Are we going to walk with someone to whom we won't even directly speak?
The erroneous teachings and lies told by the book of Enoch do not end there. That apocryphal book tells us that the Most High sent a Watcher to speak to Noah about the impending flood that he would bring on the earth. But the Bible lets us know the Lord God Himself warned Noah, and gave Noah instructions for building the ark.
In the book of Enoch we see the request of the rulers of the Watchers who sinned. Why would they make any type of request for mercy or salvation? The Bible informs us that the fallen angels--also known as Watchers--cannot be saved (2 Peter 2:4, St. Jude 6). Shouldn't a man who walked with God know that?
It's quite clear that the god of the book of Enoch is not the God of the Testaments of the Holy Bible. The doctrine of the book of Enoch differs from the doctrine of the Bible, so the book of Enoch is nothing short of being another gospel. We cannot trust in revelations, visions and secrets told in the book of Enoch. Consider what the apostle Paul says about other gospels: "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel, which is not another. But there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:6-8)
True believers are not guided by the revelations, visions and secrets of the book of Enoch or any other book that contradicts the Scriptures of the Old or New Testament of the Holy Bible.
