Do We Really Become a New Creature in Christ?

bible.jpg

Based on the Scripture of 2 Corinthians 5:17, we are taught to believe that every soul that believes on, and accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior is a new creature in Christ. That Scripture reads, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things are passed away. Behold, all things are become new."

New Creatures in Christ With Old Ways?

It's a well known fact that more than a few people in ancient and modern times truly received Christ, but sooner or later, began displaying the very same old behavior they had before they became a Christian. In fact, they became considerably worse than before they had their first encounter with the Savior. What are we to think about this? Did they become a new creature in Christ, and then revert back to the old creatures they were in the first place? Did they never become a new creature to begin with? But, how could that be in light of the Scripture telling us that whoever is in Christ is a new creature?

The Bible Explains How We Become a New Creature in Christ

Unfortunately, many people get the notion that God magically turns us into new creatures when we repent and receive Jesus as Lord. However, that is not the case at all. When we repent and receive Jesus as Lord for the first time, what happens is that we are forgiven and cleansed from all sin. We are not magically transformed into new creatures. The Bible says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

Forgiveness and cleansing are the two actions God takes on our behalf...two things we are incapable of doing for ourselves. Becoming a new creature, however, involves work, commitment and battle waged by the individual believer. God will help us, but we will do our part, or we will not become new creatures. This is exactly what the Bible reveals in the Scripture of Ephesians 4:21-32, which says, "If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, that ye put off concerning the former conversation (behavior) the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not... Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good... Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth... Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. Be kind one to another..."

The above passage makes it clear that putting off the old man, and putting on the new man, which are the old and new creatures, is OUR responsibility. No part of the passage says God will magically do it for us. God does the part we cannot do: He forgives us, and cleanses us from unrighteousness. Let us not add something He has given us to do. Unlike in the Scripture of 1 John 4:9 in which we're told God is the One who will do the forgiving and the washing away of our sins, the passage we've just read in Ephesians puts the responsibility of becoming new creatures on us, NOT on God. And if we are truly in Christ, we will take this responsibility, knowing that our Lord will help us. But also knowing He will not do it for us.

Second Corinthians 5:17 tells us that anyone who is in Christ is a new creature, and that is true, because that is God's Word. The key words are "in Christ." To be forgiven by Christ, and to be IN CHRIST are two different things. We can be forgiven by Christ, but not be in Him. Did not Christ forgive wicked men even as they nailed Him to the cross? Yes, He did. (Luke 23:34) Those men were forgiven, but they were not in Christ. A person may repent, be forgiven, and be washed of his sins. But if he does not become a new creature in Christ, it is because he is not truly in Christ. He is simply forgiven and washed by Christ. That is why 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "IF any man be IN Christ, he is a new creature." You are only a new creature if you're in Christ. Again, it's possible to be forgiven by Christ, but not be IN Christ.

If after Christ has forgiven and washed us, we do not follow the instructions of Scriptures such as the Ephesians passage above, we remain the same creature that will eventually return to his old ways. This is why the apostle Peter wrote, "For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than after they have known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb: The dog is turned to his own vomit again, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. (2 Peter 2:20-22)

Note that the dog had been taken away from his vomit, and the sow had been washed. The problem is that they remained a dog and a sow, instead of becoming new creatures in Christ through obedience to His commandments.
