Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Generally, many people would say that adherence to religion and spirituality only serves as a psychological crutch for the majority. Such a "security blanket" is thought of as a sign of a feeble mind in the religion's followers. Conclusions of this sort certainly warrant being justified when one takes into account that vast numbers of people latch on to religion and spirituality only during tribulation. They discover God after they are confined to correctional facilities which might be taken as an attempt to prove rehabilitation that may or may not be genuine. The same suspicion applies to one's decision to practice religion and spirituality later in life when he is no longer able to engage in the usual sins of youth.
Nonetheless, the average person is drawing such conclusions in their lack of knowledge and evaluation of the truth regarding other multitudes of people who are turning "religious".
The larger portion of those who abruptly turn to religion and spirituality as if it were a crutch, are located, for the most part, in the Western hemisphere where life differs greatly from that of other areas of the world. In many Asian and North African countries, as well as some nations of East Europe, it's illogical to deduce that to follow religion is to lean on a crutch. This is particularly true if the religion is Evangelical Christianity.
The charitable ministries of the VOM (Voice of The Martyrs), and also that of In Jesus' Name Ministries, two respectable organizations, report on the horrors endured by Evangelical Christians. Vast numbers of these believers in the Son of God are converts from Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Atheism. Obviously, from a purely non-Christian viewpoint, such disciples of Christ have found in Jesus, anything but a crutch.
These evangelical Christian converts withstand second-class citizenship, unjust incarceration, torture, ridicule, and martyrdom for their faith in the Lord Jesus. It's neither intelligent, nor reasonable to infer that these Christian martyrs seized a "crutch" in Jesus. It's not the weak, but the strong, who place their trust in Christ in good and bad times, in riches and in poverty, in youth and in old age--in life and in death. It's wise to ponder beyond one's own small world when forming doctrines and viewpoints related to religion and spirituality or anything else. Wisdom involves guarding against the harm of judging the world's people based on the majority of people in one area. This kind of prudence is often the mark of sound and fair judgment, high intellect, open-mindedness, all of which are commendable qualities to cherish.
The Bible, especially the New Testament, repeatedly reminds of the persecution unto death that Jesus endured and that, consequently, would be directed towards those in whom he abides--his servants.
One such scripture says, "then, said he (Jesus) unto them (his servants), Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilence, and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake" (King James Bible, Luke 21:10-12).
