Should I Join a Writers Group to Improve My Writing Skill?
Many who aspire to earn their living ask, "Should I join a writers group?" Let's offer some pointers to help you make that decision. The first set of pointers consist in answering these important questions:
1. Are you a complete novice? Or do you have some experience as a writer?
2. Have any of your writings ever been published? Please note that uploading your work to your own website or to a website that accepts any and all work does not equate to being truly published.
3. Do you aspire to earn your living or at least a sizeable side income with your writing?
4. Do you truly enjoy the art of writing so much that you'd write whether you ever earned money or not?
5. Are you a well-read individual?
If you're a complete novice, you probably are in need of improving your writing skill even if you have natural talent. Therefore, we definitely advise you to say "yes" to the question: Should I join a writers group? If you've never been truly published, it may be that your literary work has never been reviewed by anyone who'd be willing to pay for it, or to display it on his or her website. If you've once paid the bills or generated a side income with your writing, you certainly have the literary skill to succeed as an author.
If you enjoy writing so much that you'd write whether you earned your living selling your work or not, you're dedicated to the art. If you're well-read, you've probably been learning how to write unconsciously. It's probably safe to say that good writers are well-read people. Part of our learning to write comes through reading. If you want to be a good writer, but you're not well-read, you'd do well to become an avid reader of the genre of books or works you wish to author.
To sum it up, we certainly believe you can reap the benefits of a writers group if you're a novice, love to write, are well-read and desire to earn your living writing. If you have had works published, you still might want to answer "yes" to the question: Should I join a writers group? Why? Because not only can you continue to improve your writing skill, you might be able to help others who aspire to be published.
But Beware of Writers Critique Groups
It's important to consider the pros and cons of a writers group. Yes, there are also cons. What might be a con to one writer might be a pro to another. But here are some basics that tend to be cons to any aspiring author:
1. The members of the writers group neither write nor read the genre you read and write. It can be difficult to give valuable feedback on works you simply don't enjoy. This can lead to the members' complete disinterest in your submissions. For example, writers who like to write about true events might take a strong dislike to the works of fantasy writers and vice versa.
2. The members of the writers group are not concerned with earning even a side income from their literary works. This might be a sign that they are not serious writers. If you are serious, you won't fit in for very long.
3. The groups spends most of its time talking about and attending writers conferences. These conferences can be quite expensive. By no means are they necessary, nor does attending them raise your chances of being discovered.
4. The leader or one or more active members of the writers group has published works. How could this possibly be a con? Unfortunately, even the smallest success goes to the head of some people. They become the one-eyed in the land of the blind, thinking their critique should be the last word. What's more is that many writers like this find it impossible to critique without finding criticism...even if they have to dilligently nit-pick to find it. Do not let these overbearing writers whose heads are in the clouds kill your spirit. After all, they are not Nora Roberts, Mary Higgins Clarks, nor Danielle Steeles. They are unknowns who have been published.
