The Tower of Babel in the Christian Bible: Origin of All Foreign Languages?
It is estimated that there once existed as many as 6,000 languages on this planet. That is a lot! And what is the origin of all foreign languages? Can anyone know? Yes, we can all know.
The Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9
Although the title of this article alludes to the Tower of Babel as the origin of all foreign languages of the world, there's more to it than that. The tower itself, whose construction was never completed, did not bring about the multitude of languages that still exists today, despite the number of languages that have died. There was an all-wise being behind the phenomena of foreign language. We say "phenomena", because there is no natural explication for the birth of so many languages. There is, however, a supernatural one. We read:
"And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar. And they dwelt there. And they said one to another. Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. And they said, 'Go to, let us build us a city and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven. And let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.' And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, 'Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language. And this they begin to do. And now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.' So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth. And they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel, because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth" (Genesis 11:1-9).
The Tower of Babel in the Christian Bible was the event. However, the entity behind the existence of many languages of the world is the Lord Himself who brought that event to an end. Yes. God is the Creator of foreign languages...a creation that will be with us until the end of this present world. The Bible speaks of a new earth, but does not tell us whether that new earth will have only one language. We suspect that it will. Why? Because the building of the Tower of Babel was an act of rebellion against God. The Lord had told men to scatter throughout the earth. Men decided that they were not going to scatter. Not only would they not scatter, they would build a tower reaching to heaven. There will be no rebellion against God in the new earth. Therefore, it is logical to assume that everyone will speak the same language. Please keep in mind, however, that that is just our supposition.
But why should we believe the account of the Tower of Babel in the Christian Bible to be the origin of all foreign languages? After all, the biblical book of Genesis gives an account of a talking serpent. We even read in the Scriptures about other animals that talked. Isn't the whole idea of such a thing ridiculous? Well, perhaps not. Do we not consider the fact that parrots have vocal chords that allow them to speak? And what about the absolutely shocking scientific accuracy of biblical Scripture? Are you ready to learn what you probably never knew that you never knew? And remember, the Bible is so much older than other ancient writings that it makes the Koran seem like a book hot off the press. Read these
amazing scientific facts about the Bible...if you dare!
