Hearing Voices of Spirits: Satanic Influence in Our Lives
Whether we like to admit it or not, Satanic influence in our lives is very real...including the lives of Christians. While this does not mean the believer is overcome by that influence, he definitely can be affected by it. And he must resist it (James 4:7). This influence can, and often does come through hearing voices of spirits...evil spirits in Satan's kingdom. They do not necessarily have to be audible. They can be powerful mental suggestions. And they are always meant to kill, steal and destroy--the goals of the devil according to the words of the Lord Jesus Himself (St. John 10:10).
The Story of Job in the Christian Bible
Job is one of many real life examples of how hearing voices of spirits bring satanic influence into our lives. However, it is unique in that we are given a glimpse into the heavenlies where a conversation takes place between God and Satan. This very conversation not only unleashed the fiery trial of faith on Job, we also see the direct influence from Satan on another person close to him...his wife. If you don't know the story, you may read it in the Old Testament book of Job. You do not need to be a Bible scholar to understand the horrific suffering this faithful servant of God endured. However, there will be many things you don't understand...especially at the end when God finally speaks out of the whirlwind. This is why we strongly suggest that immediately after you finish reading the book, that you return to this website (HeavenlyManna.net) and use our site's search engine to search for our enlightening articles on Job. Simply search with the keyword: Job
For those of you who are at least familiar with the story, let's go to the biblical passage of Job 1:6-11. We read, "Now there was a day when the sons of God (angelic beings) came to present themselves before the Lord. And Satan came also among them. And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the Lord and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now and touch all that he hath, and he will CURSE THEE TO THY FACE."
The last sentence of the above passage reveals what Satan's goal was regarding Job: Get him to curse God. What would that do to Job? It would kill him spiritually...and perhaps it would have been an instant physical death. Remember that in St. John 10:10, Jesus reminds us that the devil comes to steal, to kill and to destroy.
Job's Wife Was Hearing Voices of Spirits
If you know the story of Job, you know how terribly he suffered. His children died. He lost his possessions. His "friends" came to torment him. And he suffered terribly in his body to the point of thinking he would physically die. Probably one of the worst aspects of his trial was not knowing about the conversation that had taken place in heavenly places between God and Satan concerning him. We have the advantage of having the Old Testament, which tells us what Job didn't know, at least not at the time of his harrowing trial.
After Job has been sick for so long, his wife begins hearing voices of spirits. We're not saying she heard audible voice, or even that she was aware of the Satanic influence under which she was operating. Nevertheless, that is exactly what was taking place. We know she either heard an audible voice from Satan and / or she receive a powerful mental suggestion from the devil. Notice what she says. We read, "Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? CURSE GOD AND DIE" (Job 2:9).
Remember that Satan had said to God, "But put forth thine hand now and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face" (Job 1:11).
Satan was using his wife to exert his influence into Job's mind and spirit, in an attempt to kill this man by moving him to curse God and die. Neither Job, nor his wife who was used by Satan, nor any of us would have any way of knowing about the heavenly conversation between God and Satan. So, no, it's not a coincidence that her words match with Satan's words: "Curse God and die." This is only one of many examples of people in the Bible being influenced to speak what Satan is trying to do in their or someone else's life. They are hearing voices of spirits that are evil...whether audible or mental suggestions. Remember that the Bible is our example. As people, influenced by demonic spirits, spoke the things they heard audibly or as suggestions, so do people today.
