¿Qué tiene que ver conmigo? por Teófila Gottfried

What Are the Benefits of Bilingualism?
The benefits of bilingualism slightly vary depending on the region in which you live, your lifestyle, profession, and personal goals. However, among the very good reasons for learning a foreign language that apply to almost anyone are: greater employment opportunities, better chances for job promotion, friendships with people who do not speak your language, opportunities to earn a supplemental income as a translator and/or interpretor, enjoyment of artistic works that have not been translated into your language, evangelism within another culture, and personal safety. Yes, personal safety.
The Benefits of Bilingualism in Employment
As the world becomes more and more "international", the ability to effectively communicate in more than one language is extremely advantageous in a number of jobs in various sectors and industries. Company owners seek to expand their businesses to other countries and to gain the business of local residents who might speak a number of different languages as immigration is on the rise worldwide. Employees who are willing to learn another language and those who are already bilingual can be a wonderful asset to the companies for which they work. However, as many greedy business owners seek to get more, but pay less, the benefits of being bilingual might benefit them more than you. More and more people are refusing to allow an employer to combine two, three, and even four jobs into one position for which they pay a salary that does not reflect the skills of the employee. Bilingual customer service representatives, for example, should always be paid at least a dollar more than monolingual representatives.
True Friendship: A Gift from God
The biblical scripture of Proverbs 18:24 says, "A man that hath friends must show himself friendly. And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." Making true friendships with people who do not speak your native tongue is one of the best benefits of bilingualism. For many different reasons many people are moving around the world. Therefore, a smattering of cultures are encountering one another, which means that the inhabitants of a growing number of places in the world are bilingual and even multilingual. Any language combination may be found at any given time. Sometimes the person or people who would be a very good friend/s is/are not speakers of your native language. Yes, true friendships, especially nowdays, are worth learning a foreign language.
Translation and Interpretation
Please keep in mind that the fact that a person is bilingual does not mean that he or she can translate or interpret on a professional level. By the same token, there are millions of bilingual people who have not had professional translator/interpreter training who can translate and interpret as well, and in some cases, better than the professionals. Although one of the benefits of bilingualism is the opportunity to earn a supplemental income working as a translator or interpreter, obtaining work is extremely difficult. And, it is probably not a good idea to expect to find work with a translation agency if you are not a certified translator/interpretor. Although difficult, your best option is probably to seek to work independently.
Enjoyment of Foreign Language Artistic Works
Another one of the benefits of bilingualism is the ability to enjoy artistic works that have not been translated into your language. Books, movies, music, and plays in a foreign language are among the works that you might miss out enjoying if they are not translated into your language.
Personal Safety
While this benefit of bilingualism hardly ever comes to mind, it is a true benefit. As much as a person might try to keep himself safe, unless he lives his life in a "box", he may decide to travel and find himself in danger. Instructions and/or warnings might be barked out in a language he does not understand. Although the very same thing could happen to someone who is bilingual or even multilingual, of course knowing more than one language increases your chances of understanding vital information in an emergency. That is especially true if a person tends to live and travel within places where the languages he speaks are spoken.
The Benefits of Bilingualism for Evangelism
This benefit of knowing more than one language is of importance to a specific group of people: those who have a passion for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with the world. Knowing another language means being able to teach the commandments of Christ within a another culture and language outside of your own. Many missionaries have learned more than one foreign language for this express purpose. And, God has greatly used them to carry the good news of the gospel to every continent on earth!
"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:18-20).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
