Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The scripture of Joshua 1:8 is one of a number of passages in the Bible that reveals to us what Christian meditation is. It records words that the Lord spoke to his servant, Joshua. God said to him, "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."
The Lord knew the things that Joshua would be facing as the new leader of the nation of Israel. It was now time for them to continue their pursuit in the conquer of the Promised Land, which was filled with enemies. The people of God always have the victory, but that is when they are walking in obedience to the Lord. The practice of Christian meditation helps the follower of Christ to keep his or her mind's eye on the Lord, the source of strength, and guidance.
The word of God, which is contained in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, is the believer's instruction in righteousness. It reveals the will of God, his promises, his warnings, and it even gives us a glimpse of the dangers to come as we do spiritual warfare in these last and evil days. Yes, the believer needs to practice Christian meditation upon the word of God, because this is the part that he or she can do to guard his or her mind against the lies and the doubt that the enemy wishes to offer.
When our minds are filled with something, it is difficult for something else, especially if that thing is opposite, to enter our thoughts. Satan is constantly attempting to enter the thought life of man in order to keep God's word out. Christian meditation is a tool and a weapon that the follower of Christ can effectively use to keep his or her mind full of the word of God--leaving no room for the word of the enemy.
Meditation God's way is simple. Unlike the mediation techniques practiced in doctrines and religions that deny the divinity of Jesus, Christian meditation is active. The one who meditates does not blank the mind out or concentrate on things such as a light bulb. The word of God does not tell the believer to blank out the mind or to have an idle mind. Rather, it tells believers to ACTIVELY meditate on the word of God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
