Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
In the book, Religions Of The World, by Kirsteen Rogers and Clare Hickman, there is the photograph of two individuals wearing costumes and scary masks in what is said to be a Christian festival that reminds of the need for people to maintain fear of the devil. The authors explain that, "These people represent the devil in a Christian festival in Mexico. The masks remind of how horrible it would be to be separated from God."
Just as it is important to know what Christianity is, it is equally important to know what Christianity is NOT. And, the teaching that having the fear of the devil reminds us of how much we do not want to be separated from God is NOT in agreement with what the Bible tells us. We are not told to fear the devil. In fact, followers of Jesus are reminded that, "...God hath NOT given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (Gideons Int'l Bible, 2 Timothy 1:7).
Instead of being told to have fear of the devil (fear of Satan), the believer in Jesus is instructed to RESIST the devil (James 4:7). And, even those who have not received Christ as Savior, and consequently, cannot resist him in the power of Christ, are NOT told to have fear of the devil. The Lord Jesus made it very clear that everyone, whether they are his servant or not, would do well to learn whom they should fear. He said, "...Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear. Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say unto you, Fear him" (Luke 12:4-5).
Can the devil cast anyone into hell? The "Christian" festival in Mexico that promotes the fear of the devil leaves people with the impression that if they are not good, the devil will cast them into hell where he will torment them. Such a notion removes fear that we should have--the fear of God, and gives people a fear that they should NOT have--a fear of the devil. We know that in the scripture of Luke 12:4-5 Jesus is warning us that the one we should fear is God, not the devil.
The devil, also known in scripture as Satan, Lucifer, the enemy, and the serpent, does not have power to cast anyone into hell. God is the only one who has the keys to hell. And, why should we have fear of the devil tormenting us in hell when he himself is going to be cast into hell by the Lord to be tormented for eternity? We read that the Lord Jesus said, "I am he that liveth and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forever more. Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death" (Revelation 1:18).
We also read, "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever" (Revelation 20:10). No, the doctrine of Christ, which is true Christianity, does NOT tell us to have fear of the devil. Why should we fear Satan and the devils in service to him when they themselves fear the Lord?
"Thou believest that there is one God. Thou doest well. the devils also believe, and TREMBLE" (James 2:19). Let us be very careful about believing that something is Christian just because it wears a Christian label. The word of God is what reveals what is truth. The truth is that true Christians do NOT encourage people to be afraid of the devil. We repeat the truths received from the Lord, who warns us all to fear him.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
