Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Understandably, some people are confused about what the spirit of fear is. However, they've been told that it is not anything good. But, they've also heard that having the fear of God is a good thing. Which is it? Let's get understanding.
We read, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (KJV, 2 Timothy 1:7). The first thing to keep in mind when reading this scripture is that the apostle Paul is speaking to the believer as the book of 2 Timothy is one of his letters to a young Christian, and leader of a church, Timothy. So, some of the things that those who have not received Christ as Savior fear are not necessarily feared by true followers of Jesus.
For example, down through the ages, missionaries have ventured into extremely dangerous territories in order to take the gospel to the ends of the Earth. The threat of a violent death, an open door for the spirit of fear, could not overpower the spirit of power given to them by the Lord. Not only are modern-day martyrs living proof of this truth, we also see the spirit of power given to the saints in biblical times who were threatened by authorities who did not want them to preach the gospel (4th chapter of Acts).
Followers of Jesus are not to believe that they should walk around fearless at all times in all situations. We plainly read of how great men of God took precautions, sometimes were afraid, and did not behave as though they were invincible. Nevertheless, part of the reason they were greatly used by the Lord was because they were not dominated by the spirit of fear--a powerful tool in the hands of the enemy to interfere with the doing of God's will, even when danger is involved. Obedient followers of Jesus do not determine for themselves what they will do for God. By the same token, they do not refuse, because of a spirit of fear, to do what the Lord tells them.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
