False Prophets in the Bible and False Prophecy Today
Is false prophecy seen in biblical scripture? If so, does that mean that there are the words of false prophets in the Bible? The record of lies that were spoken by the false prophets of biblical times are clearly revealed for what they are--lies. By the same token, the prophecy spoken by God and by his true prophets are clearly revealed as truth, because they are fulfilled with stunning accuracy in biblical and modern times.
When Believing a False Prophecy Led to Death
We read, "Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king" (1 Kings 22:6).
The prophets told the king that the Lord would be with him in the battle. They told him that he would win the war. However, what they told the king was false prophecy, because they had not received such a message from the Lord. In the same biblical passage we read that the prophet Micaiah, who truly did prophesy by the Spirit of God, revealed what fate truly awaited him, if he went to war; he would be killed. The king, however, did not want to listen to Micaiah, because he wanted to hear the false prophecy of those who had lied to him.
We read that Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah who was with the king of Israel when the false prophecy was given, said, "...Is there not here a prophet of the Lord besides, that we might inquire of him? And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the Lord. But, I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil..." (1 Kings 22:7-8).
Those false prophets in the Bible could so easily persuade the king, because the king wanted to hear only good things. They told him what he wanted to hear just like so many people, including Christians, continue to do today--they tell the people what sounds good, soothing, pleasing, and ultimately, what they desire to hear.
We learn that Micaiah not only told the king of Israel the truth about what would happen to him if he went to war, he revealed something else very important. A lying spirit (an evil spirit) was at work in the mouths of the numerous crowd of prophets who had spoken false prophecy.
"And Micaiah said, As the Lord liveth, what the Lord saith unto me, that will I speak.... I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd. And, the Lord said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in peace.... Hear thou therefore the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. And the Lord said, Who shall persuade Ahab (the king of Israel), that he may go up and fall (die) at Ramoth-gilead? And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said, I will persuade him. I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets..." (1 Kings 22:14, 17, 19-22).
We go on to read, "So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria. And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria. And, the dogs licked up his blood; and they washed his armor, according unto the word of the Lord which he spake" (1 Kings 22:37).
False Prophecy in Modern Times
Just as we see false prophets in the Bible, are there false prophets today? Yes, there are. Not only are there false prophets, there are even false Christs. Jesus warned, "For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect" (Matthew 24:24).
Many people have been deceived and will continue to be deceived by false prophecy because they are like the king of Israel. They want to hear what they want to hear.
