Where Did God Come From? What Is the Origin of Jehovah?
The Origin of Jehovah
Jehovah is known by many names in the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible: the I AM, the God of Israel, the Lord of hosts, the Most High, the eternal Father, and JESUS (a name unique to the New Testament). Throughout this article we refer to God simply as: God, the Lord, or Jesus, in reference to the living God who is God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. So, from where did God come?
In the Beginning
Neither time nor the passage of time is something that man fully understands. Not even physicists fully understand it. They certainly cannot control it; and one of the most universally accepted definitions of time is: "something" that keeps everything from happening at once. This is important to keep in mind when pondering the origin of Jehovah and asking: From where did God come?
The scripture of St. John 1:1 reads, "In the beginning was the Word (Jesus is the Word, according to St. John 1:14), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This is one of the biblical scriptures that tell us that God has lived since the beginning. What exactly is the beginning? No man can assign a date to the beginning of time. Why? Because no one knows when the beginning was or what the beginning was like. We have only a very few facts about the beginning:
1. It was a time during which the Lord created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
2. The triune God has existed ever since the beginning (St. John 1:1).
God has existed since the beginning; therefore, there has never been a time during which He did not live. This means that the Lord Himself has no beginning. This is one core truth that must be realized when seeking the biblical answer to the question: From where did God come?
Not only did man not exist in the beginning, the angels (sons of God) did not exist either. The Lord is the only one who existed in the beginning. He is the only one who really knows "when" that was, and what things were like. We see the reminder of this truth when we read what God spoke to his servant, Job, out of the whirlwind.
Job 38:1-4 says, "Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding."
There are so many more truths taught in the book of Job, particularly in the 38th chapter. However, the fact remains that God declares to Job, and to all of mankind, that He is the only one who knows when, what, and where the beginning was, because He is the only one who was there.
Man's Measurement of Time
From where did God come? He did not come from anywhere at any time. He has always been since the beginning. The Creator knew that his creatures would not be able to understand time the way He does. Is this why it is revealed in the first chapter of Genesis that the God made celestial bodies for man to have some concept of the passage of time on earth? We read, "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years" (Genesis 1:14).
I AM, Alpha and Omega
The answer to the question: From where did God come? can also be seen in the various names and titles of the Lord. We read, "And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, the God of our fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you" (Exodus 3:13-14).
The Exodus passage is only one of many in which the Lord Himself answers the question: From where did God come? He is I AM. He is saying that He has no origin. There is no origin of Jehovah. There is no origin of Jesus (God, the Word who was made flesh). Beings who have an origin had to come into existence, which means that they have a beginning, which also means that they could not have existed in the beginning. The life of those beings also was dependent on the life of some other being. This is the law of biogenesis, which simply states that living things reproduce other living things like themselves.
The Lord, however, is I AM, because his existence was not, is not, and never will be dependent on another living being. He has no beginning, because He is the beginning of all things. In the name, I AM, He is saying that He lives and that He exists of His own will. His existence is not dependent on another living being, nor did He come into being from other beings.
Jesus also reaffirmed the biblical answer to the question: From where did God come? He could so easily do this, because He was answering a question about Himself. We read, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty" (Revelation 1:8). It's interesting to note that not only does God the Son reveal that He is the beginning of all things, He also reveals that He is the end of them. "Alpha" is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. There is nothing before alpha. And, "Omega" is the last letter. There is nothing after it.
The Mysterious Melchizedek
The first part of the seventh chapter of the book of Hebrews speaks of a very mysterious being whose name is Melchizedek. Melchizedek is the Lord Himself who appeared briefly in physical form in the Old Testament. This passage helps when considering the question: From where did God come?
We read, "From this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; withouth father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God, abideth a priest continually" (Hebrews 7:1-3).
While it can be said that Adam and Eve had no father or mother. It cannot be said that they had no beginning or ending. From where did God come? The Lord did not come from anywhere. He has no beginning of days and no ending; He lives for eternity. He exists by Himself. This is the biblical answer to the question: From where did God come?
