Does the Bible Say that God Created Evil?
Do the scriptures of the Holy Bible say that the holy God of Israel created evil? That is exactly what some affirm and support with scripture. Their
explanations seem sound, but the scriptures themselves totally destroy these teachings.
The Lord Said, "I Make Peace and Create Evil"
The scripture of Isaiah 45:7 reads, "I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things."
It is this scripture that is so heavily used to support the erroneous teaching that God created evil.
When God says, "I make peace and create evil," he is NOT speaking of bringing evil into existence. He is speaking of his authority to create any situation he wants. Isaiah 45:7 in the Paraphrased Bible says, "I send good times and bad." This is the meaning of "I make peace and create evil." Notice that "create evil" is directly contrasted with "make peace." "Make peace" does not refer to bringing peace into existence; why would "create evil" mean bringing evil into existence? Isaiah 45:7 does not explain the origin of evil. This is clear to see if we simply look at the context of the passage.
Remember that "create" is used to refer not only to the creation power, but also to the changing of things and situations in other passages of the Christian Bible. For example, king David prayed, "Create in me a clean heart, O God..." (Psalm 51:10). David was not asking God to use his power of creation to literally bring into existence a new heart/mind for him. He was asking God to clean his EXISTING heart. This is only one biblical example demonstrating that "create" is used in scripture to refer to changes in situations as well as to God's power of creation; the context of the passage reveals how "create" is to be understood.
It is extremely important to get full understanding of biblical truths before attempting to teach the origin of evil. To say that God created evil is a very serious thing.
He Was a Murderer from the Beginning
Another scripture often quoted to support the teaching that God created evil is St. John 8:44. It is a record of the words spoken by the Lord Jesus. Christ taught in reference to the devil, "...He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
It is taught that since he (the devil) was a liar and murderer from the beginning, he also was evil from the beginning. The spirit of error teaches that Lucifer and the devil cannot be the same entity, because Lucifer was created a holy angel while the devil has been evil since the beginning. This is a lie and is the same as saying that God created evil and/or an evil being known as the devil from the beginning.
Have an Understanding of "From the Beginning"
Throughout the Bible we see that the Lord reveals that he knows everything before it takes place. We know that Adam and Eve were created in righteousness, because we read, "And God saw EVERYTHING that he had made, and, behold, it was very good..." (Genesis 1:31). Nevertheless, we can be certain that the Lord knew ahead of time that his righteous creatures would fall from grace. How do we know this? Do we not read, "...the Lamb (Jesus) SLAIN FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD" (Revelation 3:8)? "From the foundation of the world" means FROM THE BEGINNING.
We know that the Lamb of God did not hang on the cross to redeem sinful man until thousands of years later in the New Testament. How then was it that he was slain from the beginning? Scripture says that he was slain from the foundation of the world because he was TO BE SLAIN.
The foreknowledge of the Lord is what is behind the things that are revealed in the scriptures. Jesus teaches that the devil was a murderer from the beginning because God knew that iniquity (evil) would be found in his heart, that he would rebel and attempt to take over the throne of God BEFORE HE WAS EVER CREATED the beautiful angel that God made him. God, IN THE BEGINNING, named things that would later exist.
To say that God created evil simply because Jesus taught that the devil was a murderer from the beginning is either gross misunderstanding of the scriptures or a willful attempt to deceive others.
