Do Guardian Angles Exist According to the Christian Bible?
There are numerous real-life, personal stories of miraculous salvation of people during a time of tragedy. Firefighters are among the many people who have testimonies of physical protection in the midst of mass injury and death during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. Their stories are only a handful of the numerous accounts of events that have caused skeptics to ask, "Do guardian angels exist?" In the face of no logical or natural explanation for people escaping injury and death from accidents, acts of violence, and even war, some now wonder, "Do guardian angels exist?"
The Other Side of the "Evidence"
Despite the miraculous stories of rescue, protection and shielding from harm and/or death, many people answer in the negative the question, "Do guardian angels exist?" Are these people simply closed-minded, refusing to believe in the reality of divine intervention? Or do they have solid reasons for doubting the existence of guardian angels even in light of the "evidence" for their existence?
Some people believe that everyone has a personal guardian angel. Have those people ever asked themselves, "What about the millions of people who were murdered during the Holocaust?" How would those victims answer the question, "Do guardian angels exist?" Where was their supernatural protection when they most needed it? The same could be said for others: the slaves of the early United States, the massacres that took place during the reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, abused children, and so many others. And, what about the victims of "freak" accidents.
Were their guardian angels sleep when they were supposed to be on the job? Did heaven forget to assign them an angelic protector? Were their guardian angels too weak to protect them, or do they simply fail to show up on time to serve as "body guard?" Do guardian angels exist? Without even going as far as taking a look at the scriptures of the Christian Bible, we know that not everyone has been assigned a guardian angel.
Could it be that those who were not supernaturally spared injury or a tragic death were evil people? How can that be when millions of babies have been brutally murdered and killed in accidents? The only way to attempt to explain such a fact is to accuse those babies of having been evil in a past life. That poses an even worse problem for true believers in the word of God. The Christian Bible reveals that reincarnation is a falsehood.
The Scriptures on "Guardian" Angels
There are some scriptures that have been used to support an affirmative answer to the question, "Do guardian angels exist?" However, consideration of the above facts and a closer look at the scriptures reveal that personal guardian angels do NOT exist.
We read that the devil said to Jesus, "...If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee. And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone." (KJV, Mat. 4:6).
That scripture says nothing about everyone being assigned a personal guardian angel. The Devil is speaking to Jesus, attempting to get him to prove that he is the Son of God. Jesus is not facing a tragic event in which there is the threat of physical harm or death. This is made plain by the fact that the Devil suggests to him to throw HIMSELF down. There was nothing or no one there threatening to push him over. How does the Lord respond? He says, "...Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God" (Mat. 4:7).
Also, notice that we read in this scripture, "He shall give his angels charge concerning thee...." "He" refers to the Lord giving his angels a command to rescue. Jesus was as much man as we was God incarnate. Therefore, if there was such a thing as personal guardian angels, why would he not have been assigned one? We know that such a thought was neither in the mind of Jesus nor in that of the Devil. Otherwise, Satan would have had no need to mention about God giving his angels charge. He could simply have suggested to Christ to cast himself down because his personal guardian angel would protect him from even dashing his foot against a rock. Even if the guardian angels of some people are lazy or incompetent, causing many to suffer tragedy, certainly the one assigned to the Son of God would not fall down on the job.
Do guardian angels exist? No, not in the sense that each person has been assigned one. The Lord at any time can give his angels charge over someone to protect them from harm and/or death. This truth is based on the scripture of Matthew as well as numerous others. However, that decision is of God. The angels who rescue are given charge by God regarding what actions they are to take. They do not have "standing" orders or special assignments as in each one of them having the responsibility to protect a specific individual throughout his or her life time.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
