A Little Leaven Leaveneth the Whole Lump
In the passage of 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 we read the words of the apostle Paul who said, "Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
The Destructive Power of a Little Leaven
Harmless little "white" lies, occasional "mistakes" involving theft, adultery, fornication, jealousy, and all forms of unrighteousness are often excused. Those who excuse them include Christians as well as those who do not profess Christianity. "He/she's young." "God understands." "We all sin, so what's the big deal?" These are among the callous responses that often are given when sin has been and/or is being committed. All of those responses are true statements. Nevertheless, what was the apostle Paul's response to sin? He warned that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. He never took a careless attitude when it came to living in righteousness before God. And, he never taught or condoned such attitudes.
The Natural Reflects the Spiritual
Spiritual truths in the scriptures of the Christian Bible often are taught by comparing them to natural truths. For example, a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump of dough when making leavened bread. It takes only a little leaven, because it spreads throughout the lump to affect every and all parts of it. The word of God warns that sin, in the spirit realm, behaves in the same way as natural leaven does in the natural, tangible, and physical world.
This valuable spiritual knowledge should cause the Christian believer to be on the alert. The servant of Christ, who is seeking to grow spiritually, should never hold an attitude of making light of a "little" sin. Jesus warned his followers to beware of the leaven (sin and hypocrisy) of the religious "leaders" of his day. We see the same traits in many religious leaders of today. The apostle Paul warned his spiritual children in Christ that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
Is this why the apostle Peter warned, "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God. And if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?" (1 Peter 4:17-18).
The word of God reminds us that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump so that we will fully cooperate with God in righteous living. All of the work is not on God. Man has his part to do as well. We are told that a man should examine himself (1 Cor. 11:28). We know where we harbor envy, malice, lust, dishonesty, unjust anger, uncaring attitudes, etc. However insignificant it might seem, remember that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
