Scripture of The Day - 1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Can You Really See How Much Traffic a Website Gets?
No "Inside Information" No Accuracy
There are many websites that claim to enable anyone to see how much traffic a website gets. Generally, you simply type in the URL (web address) of the site in which you're interested, click on a button, or hit enter, and voila. Depending on the service used, you might see information reported on the following:
1. Estimated number of daily hits/visits
2. Google page rank
3. Whether the site is Google indexed
4. Whether the site is Yahoo indexed
5. Whether the site is listed in the DMOZ directory
6. Daily ads revenue
7. Number of backlinks
8. Age of the site
9. Approximate monetary worth
Certainly, it would appear that such information would allow you to see how much traffic a website gets. The problem is that the reported website usage statistics of the site you investigate are so far off that they don't even give you an idea of the success of that site. Some people tend to think that the estimates can't be too far off if more than one "reporting" site displays the same or similar statistics. That is not at all true. There are many sites with low page rank and low Alexa rank that receive thousands of hits per month. Nevertheless, their statistics can look pitiful.
Can you see how much traffic a website gets? No, you cannot, unless you are the webmaster or owner, or someone with access to "inside" statistics.
A Real Life Example
The site of cubestat.com, which claims to enable anyone to see how much traffic a website gets, is said to give one of the most accurate reports. We ran a site that has a page rank (PR) of 2, approximately 7,000 unique hits per month, listed in the Google directory, and has over 200 backlinks. Cubestat.com reported that the site had a PR of zero and no backlinks. It reported an incorrect number of daily hits and that the site was not indexed in Google. In addition to this erroneous information, it also reported an incorrect age of the site.
It should be clear that you cannot see how much traffic a website gets. On the site we just mentioned, webtraffic24.com reported only 21 daily hits! That is further off than being in "left field."
All decent web hosting companies provide website usage statistics for their sites. It typically requires no more than signing into a control panel and clicking on the appropriate link to view valuable information about your site. Of course this does not work if you don't have access to inside information. This is why it is clear that no one can really see how much traffic a website gets. Rarely can they even see the approximate amount of traffic to the site.
