Christian Birth Control in Light of Biblical Scripture
Should Having Children Be Left to Chance?
We completely understand when someone speaks of not leaving having children to chance; and that there is God's will and there is making decisions. The difference that we see with decisions regarding children is that it is not like deciding where to go to college, what car to buy, or where to go for vacation. Those things are outside of the body. But, conception, pregnancy, and birth are in the body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit of God. This is why it is very important to get understanding on the subject of Christian birth control.
The believer is told that his/her body is no longer his/her own (1 Cor. 6:19). Instructions were given to Israel regarding things that they were not to do with their body: certain types of piercings, cuts in their flesh for the dead, certain hair cuts, tattoos, having relations in which the man was not circumcised, etc. In light of God's sovereignty over the skin and hair, We can't help but think that he's also sovereign over the womb, which he opens and shuts, according to his will as seen throughout scripture. Keeping this in remembrance is essential to learning what the Lord teaches us about Christian birth control in his eyes.
We know that many people say that God did not slay Onan because he interfered with conception. They say that he was killed because he disobeyed his father and because he didn't show love for his brother. One Christian writer pointed out that Onan's father had no authority over him because he was married, so there was no disobedience. He reminds of the word of God that says that a man leaves father and mother and cleaves to his wife. Also, what other married man in scripture was killed by God for not obeying his father? The same writer pointed out that the fact that he did not raise up seed to his brother does not agree with Deuteronomy 25:6-9, which states how a man who refuses to raise up seed to his deceased brother is to be treated. His punishment was to be shamed, not killed. So, if Onan didn't die because he refused to show love to his brother by having kids for him or for disobeying his father who no longer had authority over him, we have to ask why then did God kill him? And why does scripture go into detail of what he did to keep from getting her pregnant after which he was slain? We believe these are legitimate questions when discussing the scriptures on Christian birth control.
Regarding traditional birth control, the pill is not only dangerous, it actually aborts life. It is not very reliable for stopping fertilization, but for making the womb a hostile environment so that the fertilized egg will die. Certainly, this should never be called Christian birth control. We believe that life begins at conception. Therefore this is not birth control; this is abortion (murder). Condoms are not without problems either. The lubricants used, as well as the condom itself contains chemicals that are known carcinogens (cancer causing agents). Lubricants are not needed when totally natural, God-intended relations take place. A disease-free, circumcised man presents no health danger to himself or to his female partner, if she is also disease-free, ready to be with him, and they are joined in holy matrimony.
Christian Birth Control for the "Wrong" Reasons
Some Christian married couples seek to practice Christian birth control because of fears. They fear being able to financially support children. They might fear having children after a certain age. They might even fear that they would not know how to be good parents. How does the word of God answer these concerns?
If the Lord wanted his married servants to have children, he is certainly able to take care of the parents and the offspring as all people belong to him. Jesus told his servants not to worry about the basics of life in the same way that the Gentiles do, but to worry about doing his will and that those necessary things would be added to them (Luke 12:29-31). Some who are seeking a form of Christian birth control would do well to first examine the reasons for opposition to having children. There may be legitimate reasons, but fear is not one of them as God has not given his servants the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7).
Abraham and Sarah did not worry about how two old people were going to care for their son, Isaac. Moses' mother trusted God to take care of her son in the midst of slavery and a decree to kill male infants. Our own Savior was born in the midst of poverty and troubled times. The practice of Christian birth control should never be fueled by a lack of faith in the Lord.
