Christian Prayers for Funerals
Christian prayers for funerals, like all prayers, should be made with God's will in mind and by the leading of his Spirit. Funerals are unique in that they are a most appropriate time to cause people to reflect on the seriousness of the need to receive Christ as Savior before death. Sadly, there is a tendency to try to "beautify" the ugliness of death, a grave consequence of the original sin in Eden, instead of putting forth the gospel.
God's Will Reflected in Christian Prayer for Funerals
We read that the Lord is, "...Longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (KJV, 2 Peter 3:9). This is only one of many scriptures that tell us in no uncertain terms that God wills for man to repent and be saved. At almost every funeral service are people who do not know Christ in the pardon of their sins. In fact, some of those people are at the funeral to see how much money was spent on the coffin, flowers, etc. The enemy is at work virtually everywhere and during almost every occasion. His evil work should be combated in the Spirit (power) of Christ by Christians.
Christian prayers for funerals can be made by asking the Lord to bring conviction on the people attending the service who are in need of it. This includes those who will speak. There are the people who attend only to gape without remembering that they might be joining the deceased sooner than they think. There are those who will make statements that have become very popular at funerals, but that do not encourage the need to take salvation seriously. Christian prayers for funerals can be lifted against this influence of the enemy. The believer making the prayers should then be willing to do however the Lord guides them in the answer of those prayers.
Of course, it would be very distasteful to hint, at a funeral, that the deceased might not have died in right standing with God. Nevertheless, making statements about the deceased floating on clouds in heaven, looking down on his or her funeral, wings outstretched and playing a harp does not change truth. If that person was not saved or did not make peace with God before death, he or she is not rejoicing with the angels of heaven. Of course this does not apply to someone who truly never heard the gospel of Jesus. Most people, however, in the United States have heard. Christian prayers for funerals can be lifted against the attitudes, the falsehoods, and the "pretty" words that interfere with the need and opportunity to preach repentance.
The Deceased Who Did Not Live in Obedience to Christ
It's becoming more and more popular to say that every deceased person who was not a murderer in life made it to heaven. That person could have been a fornicator or adulterer, but people want to believe that he or she is suddenly saved and with Jesus in death. This belief is not in agreement with God's word. Many will say that no one knows if the deceased made peace with God before death. Others believe that if the person was ever once saved, he or she died saved, despite living in sin. Again, this is not God's word.
What then is the safest and most respectful thing to do or say when the deceased clearly didn't live in obedience to the word of God and it's unknown whether they repented? We can simply refrain from saying that they are rejoicing in heaven. We admit that we do not know about their eternity. Saying what sounds good does not make something that might not be good, okay.
May born again believers in Jesus lift up fervent Christian prayers for funerals that the gospel of our Lord goes forth as he commanded at funerals and everywhere.
