Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The number of Christian singles frustrated with the daunting task it is to find a Christian wife or husband continues to grow. While it definitely is true that genuine, born again believers in Jesus are very hard to find, sometimes it is the behavior of single Christians that causes them to miss out on a potential godly spouse. Here are 10 reasons to stay single--bad reasons:
1. Ridiculous expectations for a spouse - Some Christian singles want what they would consider to be a perfect husband or wife. The person they want is beautiful in appearance and beautiful in all of his or her ways. This same person is also a servant of Christ, has plenty of money, is without children, has a "clean" past/background, and is educated. Unfortunately, this person also exists only in the imagination. This is probably one of the more popular 10 bad reasons to stay single.
2. Denominational affiliations - A good number of Single Christians want to find a Christian husband or wife of their exact same denomination. While there are some denominations that are Christian only in name, (because of their denial of the divinity of Christ) this is not always the case. It is no wonder there isn't unity in such a divided body of Christ nowadays. This one of the 10 reasons to stay single is also standing in the way of what possibly could lead to holy matrimony.
3. Controlling behavior - Some single Christian men who do not understand the role of a Christian wife, as put forth in the scriptures, exhibit controlling behavior. Fewer and fewer single Christian ladies, particularly those who have been called into ministry, will stay around long enough for anything serious to get started.
4. Fear - There are still ladies who do not like to "make the first move." However, the number of men who are too bashful to approach a lady appears to be growing. What a bad combination. This is why fear appears on the list of 10 bad reasons to stay single.
5. No time for a relationship - It takes time to form relationships. A couple of minutes put into writing an email or a conversation by phone does not work. If you're too busy to spend some quality time getting to know someone, why are you looking for a spouse in the first place?
6. Being closed to online dating - Let's face it. If you can't meet someone in your local area, it might be a good idea to try online dating. The fee-based sites don't tend to be any better than totally free Christian dating sites and services. Of course you must be careful with meeting people online. And you don't have to be careful meeting someone in the "real" world? This is one of the really bad 10 reasons to stay single.
7. Personal appearance - People can shout "big is beautiful" all they want. It's not going to make obesity any more attractive to those who don't want someone who can't control his or her weight. Diets don't work, but changing your eating habits and being faithful to exercise almost always work. Some ladies need to wear a little make-up to cover blemishes. Also, while many people nowadays dress like a bum, not everyone approves of going out in clothes that can't be distinguished from pajamas. Personal appearance makes a huge impression.
8. Being controlled by others - The list of the ten bad reasons to stay single wouldn't be complete without this one. Many married Christians not only couldn't care less about the problems of Christian singles, some of them actually do not want these singles to find a Christian wife or husband. Some preach concentrating on the things of the Lord instead of on looking for a wife or husband; but, they have their spouse. Many of these same people wouldn't spend even a few days without a partner. Why listen to them if you are not certain that they have good intentions toward you?
9. Age preferences - Many males have a tendency to refuse to consider a lady who is even one year older than themselves. If age is some kind of threat, there is something wrong. Having a problem with age differences of more than five years is understandable. However, nitpicking over even a couple of years is a major one of the 10 bad reasons to stay single.
10. Miscommunication - Misunderstandings in any type of communication are bound to occur. However, they can be cleared up simply by respectfully asking for clarification instead of going silent. Unfortunately, falling silent is what many "mature" adults do. If you don't have communication or social skills, perhaps it would be better to gain them before attempting to find a Christian wife or husband.
There certainly are other things that could make the list of 10 bad reasons to stay single. However, many of them are related to these.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
