What Is the Easiest Foreign Language to Learn?
Is there any one, correct answer to the question, "What is the easiest foreign language to learn?" No, there is not, because a "good" answer comes from having considered several factors. Those factors include: native language, special interest in specific languages, special interest in specific cultures, previous exposure to a language, and opportunities for immersion in a language and culture. Only after having considered all of these factors can a useful answer be provided to the question of what is the easiest foreign language to learn.
Native Language Matters
Most languages are divided into "families." Each family has unique characteristics. For example, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are members of the family of romance languages. True speakers of any of them can easily and quickly spot the great similarities. Spanish speakers say "uno" for one; and French speakers say "un" or "une." The Spanish word for "God" is "Dios," while in French it is "Dieu." This is only a very small sampling of how similar one romance language can be to another. Some native speakers of Spanish find that Italian, French or Portuguese is the easiest foreign language to learn due to the similarities, which usually breeds familiarity.
It is no wonder that many native speakers of English do not agree with saying that Spanish is the easiest foreign language to learn. English belongs to the germanic family of languages, which includes German.
Special Interests
Sometimes, having a special interest in a particular language or culture aids learning. And when it comes to searching for the easiest foreign language to learn after the age of ten, you'd do well to have all the help you can get. Learning is always easier when it's also fun or when there's a specific goal behind the learning. Also, culture and customs are reflected in language, so it is extremely helpful, even necessary at times, to understand the thought behind a word or expression.
Previous Exposure
Most people find that previous exposure to a language, especially to spoken language, is helpful. This might be the strongest argument in favor of native English-speakers in the United States being told that Spanish is the easiest foreign language to learn. Spanish is widely spoken in all of the large cities and towns of the U.S.A, and in many of even the smallest towns nowadays. The "foreign" ear at least gets introduced to the sound of the language before studying it.
Previous exposure tends to be very helpful when speaking of learning what is known as tone languages such as Chinese and some of the languages of Africa. Most foreign speakers of tone languages never master the "rhythm" of the language like the native speakers. However, they've made great achievement if the can understand and be understood in a tone language.
Immersion Is Vital
No language can be the easiest foreign language to learn when there is insufficient exposure to it in the real world. Text books and classroom instruction are no match for learning by immersion, which will sharpen comprehension, oral skills, and even the understanding and use of slang. If you live in the United States, immersion seldom requires traveling outside of the country. There's little Italy, little China, little Russia, and a little every other nation right here within one of the large towns or cities.
The easiest foreign language to learn for one person is not the easiest to learn for another.
