Carnal Christians: Who Are They?
Carnal Christians or Spiritual Christians?
The scripture of Romans 8:6-8 says, "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God."
The above passage of the Christian Bible, though it might not be fully understood by new believers, makes it clear that to be carnally minded is not a good thing. Why? Because the carnal mind cannot really please God. Therefore, it's logical to say that carnal Christians cannot really please God. But, aren't all Christians spiritual? No, they are not all spiritual. In fact, many walk according to the flesh (natural man), not according to the Spirit.
The word of God reveals that new believers, sometimes referred to as "babes in Christ" in the scriptures, are often carnal Christians. This is understandable. In the natural world, we don't expect the same things from babies as we do from older children. We expect even more from adults. When speaking of a relationship with the Lord, mature believers don't expect the things from babes in Christ as they do from those who say that they have been walking with God for years. However, many people who are not babes in Christ, in terms of the length of time they have been a Christian, behave like many babes in Christ in that they are carnal Christians.
Characteristics of Carnal Christians
We read, "And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal" (1 Corinthians 3:1-4)?
There's much jealousy in the church; there's much argument, and there's much division. Much of the division has nothing to do with rejecting what is truly contrary to scripture, but with specific church membership. In other words, it is usually a pastor who is worshiped and followed rather than the word of God. Envy, strife, and division are characteristics of carnal Christians.
