What Is True Christian Love? - Part I
True Christian Love Defined by God's Word
The word "charity" in the word of God refers to true Christian love, which has a definition very different from the one many people have, including believers in Jesus. So, exactly what does the Bible say about love, or charity? How does it define and describe it? We have our answer in the scripture of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, which teaches, "Charity suffereth long and is kind. Charity envieth not. Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, does not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked , thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth...."
This passage not only reveals what true Christian love is, it also reveals what true Christian love is not. Having charity does not translate into being a doormat or into excusing sin. It is specifically the things that the apostle Paul teaches that it is, not any more or any less.
Sixteen Characteristics of True Christian Love
The apostle Paul named sixteen things of which true Christian love is composed. When any of those elements are missing, charity is not complete; it is flawed. Paul taught that charity:
1. Is patient (suffereth long)
2. Is kind
3. Does not envy
4. Is not vain and does not brag (vaunteth itself not)
5. Is not haughty (is not puffed up)
6. Does not behave out of order (does not behave itself unseemly)
7. Is not selfish or a seeker of glory (seeketh not her own)
8. Is slow to anger and does not become defensive when not being attacked (is not easily provoked)
9. Does not harbor evil thoughts (thinketh no evil)
10. Does not rejoice in sin and wickedness (rejoiceth not in iniquity)
11. Is made glad by the truth (rejoiceth in the truth)
12. Carries the things that God assigns to her (beareth all things)
13. Believes every word that proceeded from God, not just those words that are easy to "swallow" (believeth all things)
14. Maintains hope in God in all situations, including the ones that appear to have no solution (hopeth all things)
15. Endures every trial, tribulation, and uncomfortable situation for the love of Christ(endureth all things)
16. Cannot be overcome by the world (never faileth)
The follower of Jesus can actually meditate on these sixteen characteristics of true Christian love as he asks himself, in sincerity, if his charity is weak in/missing any part of the definition of love according to the word of God. The scriptures are a "mirror" into which believers can peer in order to get an idea of how they look in God's eyes. This is why we read, "For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass. For he beholdeth himself and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed" (James 1:23-25).
