Visa and Master Card Gift Card: Stop Auto Renewal of Subscriptions
The Problem With Auto Renewal of Subscriptions: A Visa and Master Card Gift Card to the Rescue
There are many online merchants selling subscriptions to services and products. Most of them set customers' subscriptions to auto-renew and tend to "forget" requests for the cancellation of services or products, so they may continue to charge. What can you do to ensure that you never pay for subscriptions you no longer want? Of course, the obvious solution is simply not to purchase the subscription in the first place. But, what if you'd really like to try the service or product? Is there any other way to protect your pocket book from merchants who auto-renew subscriptions for their convenience--not yours, despite what they say? Yes, there is, thanks to the existence of the Visa and Master Card gift cards, but they almost always display the word "gift" somewhere on the front of the card. They carry an expiration date and a three digit security code on the back. Visa and Master Card gift card balances can be conveniently checked online at the web site indicated by the issuer and also by calling a toll-free number.
Some of these cards are available in predetermined amounts, others in predetermined ranges of amounts. For example, the Vanilla visa gift card is usually available as a $25, $50, $75 or $100 card. You can also almost always purchase the amount of charging power you want generally ranging anywhere from $25 - $500. If you purchase an auto-renewing subscription from a questionable company, simply make sure that you use up the rest of the funds on your card before your subscription comes due to auto-renew. The dishonest merchant will not be able to continue charging you, because no funds will be available for them to "steal."
Don't Confuse the Visa Master Card Gift Card with Prepaid Charge Cards
True Visa and Master Card gift cards are very different from prepaid Visa and Master Card cards for which we make no recommendation. Unlike a prepaid charge card, true gift cards cannot be reloaded with funds. Once the funds are used, the card is "dead." This is where your protection against unwanted auto-renewal of subscriptions is. Also, unlike reloadable Visa and Master Card, you are not required to disclose your social security number, because a gift card is temporary and non-reloadable. When you first purchase a Visa or Master Card gift card, you'll be charged a fee in the range of $4.95 - $6.95, and you'll have to pay with cash.
What You Can't Do With Gift Cards
Gasoline purchases at the pump are not permitted with Visa and Master Card gift cards. Also, you'll sometimes run into problems with purchasing online at the web sites of some merchants who insist on the use of an actual credit cards. Their system will give you an error message, stating that there was a problem with your card and will ask you to use a different one. This is because the system couldn't verify a complete billing address. There's a very easy ways around this. You can purchase the subscription with your gift card by phone. The merchant should have a toll-free number for purchases by phone. While they block Visa and Master Card gift card purchases online so they can discourage their use, they hardly ever have such blocks when you order a subscription by phone. If the representative with whom you're speaking doesn't know how to charge a Visa or Master Card gift card, ask to speak to a supervisor. They do not want to loose your business.
Currently, some of these cards only offer registration of a zip code at their web site. These are the ones that might sometimes be problematic, but even they can be used with purchases by phone. Those that allow or require the registration of a complete billing address at their web site will always work for online purchases.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse. Very interesting topic, and I would like to add my two cents.
There is another interesting way to avoid Auto Renewals (and unexpected charges on purchases) for those who currently have a credit card or are willing to apply for one issued by certain banks.
I came to know this method as "Virtual Account Numbers" (Citi) and "ShopSafe" (Bank of America), but other banks market this service differently.
The way this method works is that you create a new credit card number; you set the number of months that the "fake" card will be valid for (expiration date), and the maximum amount that can be charged on it. Usually, these numbers are good for one merchant and one transaction.
Discover offer a similar service but, as far as I remember, they don't allow to change the expiration date or to limit the amount that can be charged. In other words, they just create an alias to your real card which will expire when the real one does.
