Insignia Digital Camera: It's Also Perfect For Users of Linux

There are plenty of very cheap digital cameras available ranging from $14.99 to $24.99. Of course, most of them take poor quality pictures, have no movie/video feature and don't last very long. However, they can be a very entertaining gift to a youngster. They can also introduce curious adults to the world of digital photography without them having to spend a lot. Unfortunately, these cheap digital cameras are usually not an option for people who strictly use some flavor of the Linux operating system. Every one of the very cheap cameras I've seen are designed and built to work only with Windows. That's not the case with the Insignia digital camera.

The good news is that for anywhere from $49.99 to $139.99, depending on the raising and lowering of the price, the Insignia digital camera can be purchased from Best Buy stores. That's an economical price range considering that many of these electronics are still selling for as much as $300.00. It's not to say that they're not worth it considering the features they offer. But, if you don't need those features, why pay for them?

The Insignia digital camera is not really an "off" brand; it's the brand of Best Buy. It takes high quality pictures and offers the following features: movie/video with audio capture and playback, face detection and tracking, and 32MB internal flash memory. There's only approximately 20MB of internal storage available for movies, meaning that you can make a video of roughly 35 seconds. That's not much, but the camera supports SD cards up to 4GB and SDHC cards up to 16GB to allow for the making of a much longer movie. The file format is .AVI. A good amount of light is necessary to make a decent video, but don't expect the quality you'd get with a more expensive camera. Nevertheless, for those of us who only take pictures occasionally and hardly ever make movies, it's perfect. I also like the ability to add storage capacity only when and if I chose instead of having to pay for it up front.

I run the Fedora distro of Linux on my desktop (Fedora 8) and Puppy on my laptop. I was amazed at the ease with which the Insignia digital camera was recognized. Fedora creates a folder to which photos are downloaded and Puppy reads the camera as a removable drive that automatically mounts and appears on the desktop and to which the pictures are downloaded. Puppy uses the same icon that indicates thumb/pen drives to also indicate the presence of the camera. I recently downloaded a free converter that supposedly will convert the .AVI and other formats to .FLA since some web hosts only allow the Flash format.
