What Professional Wrestling Used to Be and Why I Ceased Watching

Approximately twelve years ago I stopped watching professional wrestling after years of tuning in to see the wrestlers of the WWF, NWA, WCW, and Monday night RAW. I remember the days when Hulk Hogan was at the height of his popularity as the good guy, the all American hero. In his messages to kids he told them to eat their vitamins and say their prayers. Some of the other good guys (before their roles turned to ones of villain, at least some of them) were the Junk Yard Dog, also known as the JYD, Ricky the Dragon Steamboat, Kerry, Kevin and Mike Von Erich, Greg Gagne and Tito Santana. There were also the wrestlers, who by the way are excellent actors, who were the bizarre, the crazy, the amazing, the wild and the haters of the United States. They included George the Animal Steele (portrayed a lunatic), Andre the Giant and Jimmy Superfly Snuka (the amazing), Kamala the Ugandan Giant and Chief Wahoo McDaniel (the wild). Finally, there was the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff who entertained and stirred up the crowd by displaying signs with anti-American messages and who were a fictitious representation of America's enemies.

Among my favorites, at some point during my years of watching professional wrestling, were Bret the Hitman Hart, Rowdy Roddy Piper, the Nature Boy Ric Flair, Jimmy Superfly Snuka, Marty Jinetti, Terry Taylor, Ricky the Dragon Steamboat, and Samu. I also took to the tag team of Davey Boy Smith and the Dynamite Kid (the British Bull Dogs) and the French-speaking Dino Bravo.

The wrestlers I greatly disliked included Adrian Adonis, Yokozuna, Jake the Snake Roberts, the tag team of the Midnight Express, Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig and Randy Macho Man Savage along with Ms. Elizabeth.

Way back in the 1970's my great grandmother would always get a thrill out of watching the midgets fight. She would jump up and down, rooting for her favorite wrestler.

Obviously, I was entertained by the shows that professional wrestlers put on for their audiences. What made me and many others turn away never to return watching them? Professional wrestling once did not include the sleeze of half-naked women parading around the ring. This not only contributes to the degradation of women, it changes the whole experience of watching the sport that used to be entertaining to male and female viewers. When Mark Calloway came on the scene as the Undertaker, there also came a disturbing promotion of interest in things of the occult. The paranormal and the supernatural relating to evil, death and destruction came to be held in some kind of esteem by many of this wrestler's fans who included young children. Also, wrestlers in past times refrained from using profanity which of course showed some decency towards ladies and children.

No one can dispute the fact that American society has become one of violent crime even committed against and by very young children. It has become one of daily profanity and foul language, disrespect for the law, the clergy, teachers, parents, and even God. While there are government and law officials, parents, teachers, and clergymen who don't lead respectable lives, many still do, yet they too are given no honor. American society has become rude and unfriendly and one in which common courtesies such as the use of "please" and "thank you" are vanishing. People are now even afraid to speak to one another on the streets.

Deterioration of anything, be it a building, one's health, a family, or an entire society doesn't happen over night. It happens gradually as maintenance is neglected. Maintenance involves preserving and encouraging what has proven to be good and rejecting and discouraging what has proven to be a cancer. Each individual can do his or her part.

Welcome! It is me again!

I watched this so called wrestling today. From what I saw only Vladimir Kozlov was good to watch ( maybe because I too are connected with SAMBO and I like Russians, because they are my brothers according to the flesh, like all slavs - i was once heavy panslavic ) but even he displayed communist hammer and sickle, but he atleast did not provoked and used anything occult ( And thanks God he beaten Undertaker ). Rest modern WWE " entertainers " are showoffs with too big ego, promoting occult and what is worst, half naked women were let on ring to fight alongside with man. It is too hard to not explode with laughter when Kelly Kelly fights, making strange sounds only to rise " el mano corunto " after winning.

I agree with Cornelius. In my opinion, professional wrestling today is a very bad influence. It embraces the occult and is sleazy.
