Student Ethnicity and Student Race Questions on College Admissions Applications
Online College Admissions Applications
Not only do most institutions of higher learning offer college admissions applications online, their web sites make it appear as though prospective students can no longer submit a paper application. One advantage of this is that the school can control what questions on the application are mandatory. Among such questions are those that ask about student race and student ethnicity. Many people are led to believe educational institutions, at least those in the United States, that receive federal and state funds in the form of financial aid, must ask about student race and student ethnicity. This is not true.
While the school is required to ask these questions, prospective students are not required by any state or federal law to answer them when completing college admissions applications. When the school has to report on student race and student ethnicity, it can simply report "unknown" for the student population that did not answer the questions. These questions are optional, not mandatory. However, students are not told of this option that they have and that individual school "laws" do not override federal law or the freedom to choose not to answer questions about student race and student ethnicity on college admissions applications.
Request a Paper Application
Colleges and universities, including "non-profit" schools are concerned with the almighty dollar like any other business. They do not want to loose any prospective student simply because he or she does not want to answer questions about student race and student ethnicity. If the student communicates refusal to answer these questions and requests a paper application, almost all schools will oblige because they know the student can study elsewhere.
What is the big deal over these types of questions on college admissions applications? First, questions that have nothing to do with a student getting an education should not be asked. Second, why would a society in which the majority of members claim they would like to achieve color-blindness, insists on seeing color when it is of no importance or significance?
Christian Food for Thought on Education
Remember, a college degree does not make a person wise and the knowledge and wisdom of the world can never replace the wisdom of God.
The Bible is scientifically accurate. These are just a few of the scriptures that prove this truth. It was written in the scriptures that Earth is round at a time when men thought it was flat. "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth..." (KJV, Isaiah 40:22). The Hebrew word "chuwg" is used in Isaiah and denotes being spherical or arched in shape, not a flat circle.
Another interesting Bible fact is that it mentions the existence of cavemen. "They were driven forth from among men to dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth..." (Job 30:5-6).
Biology teaches that animals cannot live without sufficient amounts of blood that must supply oxygen and nutrients essential to survive. God's people knew this before Biology was ever a discipline when the Lord told Moses, "For the life of the flesh is in the blood..." (Leviticus 17:11).
An interesting Bible fact is that the scriptures tell man that the stars in the heavens cannot be enumerated. To this day, no scientist has succeeded in counting them--and never will, because the Bible reads, "As the host (stars) of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea..." (Jeremiah 33:22).
God's word perfectly describes the circulation of the waters on Earth as accurately as a meteorologist. It teaches hydrology when it explains, "All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full, unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again" (Ecclesiastes 1:7). The Bible also speaks of how clouds are formed even using the word "vapours", lightning, thunder, the purpose of snow and rain and much more about the weather in the scriptures of Psalm 135:7, Isaiah 55:10, Jeremiah 10:13, and Job 36:27-29.
Biogenesis states that living things produce more living things of their own kind. This was known as far back as the writing of the Old Testament book of Genesis, before Biogenesis was ever "invented." "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind..." (Genesis 1:11). "And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind..." (Genesis 1:21).
The Conclusion
Knowing that these interesting Bible facts are only the beginning of the amazing wisdom found in no other book but God's Word should encourage students to remind themselves of the glory of God, the infallibility of his word and the seriousness with which it should be received.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
