Moses and the Burning Bush: What Is Scripture Teaching Us? Part I
God Calls Moses in the Burning Bush
The Christian Bible records the account of Moses and the burning bush in the scripture of Exodus 3:1-5 which reads, "Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the Lord (God's spirit, not an angelic being) appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground."
There are a few points to keep in mind in order to grasp the deeper meaning of Moses and the burning bush. They are: the bush was on fire, but didn't burn up; the angel of God was in the midst of the bush, Moses couldn't get too close to the burning bush, and God told him to take off his shoes because he was standing on holy ground.
The Fire of the Burning Bush and the Fire of the Natural World
When the Lord called Moses to lead his people out of slavery in Egypt, he attracted his attention with the burning bush. Surely such a site would get the attention of anyone. However, God could have worked any sign or wonder he wanted to in order to get Moses' attention. What spiritual truths are being offered to the believer in the account of Moses and the burning bush?
We know that natural fire has the power to destroy and it has the power to purify. If something catches on fire and the fire is not put out, it will be consumed or burned up. On the other hand, needles and even knives used to pierce an ear or to cut the skin can be passed through fire for purification before use. Purification, of course, is essential to help prevent the set-up of infection, which poses a grave risk to a person's health and life.
The things in the natural world are tangible, visible, and audible manifestations of the things in the spiritual realm. This is why Jesus, in his parables and teachings, almost always compared the natural with the spiritual. For example, he speaks of himself being the true vine and says that his servants are branches of him. He reminds the Christian believer that he or she cannot live unless they remain a part of the vine. Gardeners know that branches need to remain on the vine for nourishment, for life. This is only one of a plethora of examples comparing the natural world with the spiritual world to make Christian believers understand that the two worlds parallel each other.
