The Features of Linux Email Clients
The Basics First
Linux email clients, like any others, are generally used for email management on a local machine. Of course, you must have an Internet connection to download and send messages, but once downloaded and sent, you don't have to be online. Web mail, on the other hand, offers the freedom of being able to retrieve your mail from any computer connected to the Internet. For example, if you have a free Yahoo email account, you can retrieve and send mail from any computer with an Internet connection. The type and provider of the account determines whether you can enjoy both advantages. You might be familiar with Microsoft (MS) Outlook and Outlook Express for receiving, sending, and managing your personal and business-related electronic correspondence. If you're considering a partial or full switch to a Linux operating system, also known as a distribution, distro or flavor, you might want to know what Linux email clients are like.
The Evolution Email Client
There are many programs from which to choose that will serve as well as MS Outlook, Eudora, or any of the other well known clients. However, Evolution email client is among the better known ones in the Linux world. If you can set up an account in Outlook, you can set up an account in Evolution. Be aware that most Internet Service Providers (ISP's) will tell you that if you use Linux, they don't offer any technical support. There's really no need to be concerned about this as long as you've confirmed that they don't require software to connect to their servers. You only need to know the settings for Post Office Protocol (POP3) and (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) SMTP accounts. If there are any special settings for authorizing a secure connection, your ISP will have that information. Remember that some email providers will only allow you to receive mail, but not to send it through their servers from within an email client. This is usually seen with free accounts and should not present a problem because you should be able to send through your ISP anyway.
Many Linux email clients offer the freedom and control that even the most demanding user requires. The Evolution email client allows you to import data from other programs and set up folder permissions for good organization. It also provides the ability to apply message filters and perform searches which is quite useful if you run a business, receive lots of e-mails, and need to avoid the frustration of spam without missing potentially important messages. The Evolution email client isn't the only major and powerful application among the ones that are available as bundled programs and in repositories.
I use Evolution under my Fedora system and the SeaMonkey client under my Puppy Linux system. Both work great and are pretty much self-explanatory when it comes to using the many features they offer. Some people still think that Linux email clients are like many open source programs used to be in the past--without documentation. However, this is no longer true. You have access to good documentation like you do with fee-based, closed source software and there are just as many resources for technical support on the Internet as there are for MS Outlook. Below is a screen shot of the Evolution email client to give you an idea of the very user friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) it has.
Evolution is an email client that comes bundled with many distributions such as Fedora. You may download Evolution if you'd like, but you will have to know how to compile source code as it has not been packaged for specific distributions. Compiling is something that I would definitely not recommend for a novice. If you want to attempt it, be sure to download the latest stable versions because unstable versions are also offered for download.
