Unpopular Scripture from the Word of God - Part II
We continue our look at the unpopular scriptures from the word of God in this second part of our study. Click here for part I.
Repent Ye
The scripture of Mark 1:15 records the command of the Lord Jesus when he preached, "...The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Many people have come to interpret the famous scripture of St. John 3:16 as a message that says there's no need to repent if you believe in Jesus. If simply believing that Jesus exists and that he is the Son of God is all there is to being saved, why did Christ preach, "Repent ye." Does not the word of God say, "...Hereby we do know that we know him, IF we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him" (1 John 2:3-4). It goes without saying that 1 John 2:3-4 figures among the most unpopular scripture from the word of God.
Cursed for Rejecting Christ
"If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema (accursed), maranatha (the Lord is coming/ come Lord)" (1 Corinthians 16:22). This scripture from the word of God is of course extremely unpopular with those who reject the truth that
Jesus is the only way of salvation. This is all the more reason that Christian churches would do well to preach what is popular and what is not popular that the fullness of the gospel of Jesus is made known. Romans 10:14 says, "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?"
The Chastening of the Lord
The scripture of Hebrews 12:5-8 says, "And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, my son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him." This is another very unpopular scripture from the word of God because it is unpleasant and often embarrassing to be chastened by man or God. This is why the believer is taught not to despise God's rebuke and chastening. Scripture goes on to teach us, "For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth and scourgeth (whips) every son (and daughter) whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the Father chasteneth not? But, if ye be without chastisement, whereof ALL are partakers, then are ye bastards and not sons" (Hebrews 12:6-8).
The Word of God to Fornicators
What was once called fornication by the church and "shacking up" by the world is now referred to by much "milder" terms. But, the sin is not made any milder or less wrong or harmful by using modern words to refer to it.
"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived, neither FORNICATORS, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God" (I Corinthians 6:9-10).
There are so many more scriptures from the word of God that are very unpopular. Why are they also hardly ever mentioned even by Christians?
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
