The Christian Bible on Atheism and the Atheist
Atheism Described in the Christian Bible
One of the most important things about the Bible a reader should keep in mind when reading scripture is that God's word was written for all generations, cultures, and nations (Psalm 100:5, 1 Peter 1:25). Therefore, many things are described rather than called by a specific name because vocabulary changes with time. While the words "atheism" and "atheist" don't exist in scripture, the basic definition of atheism and a basic description of an atheist does.
Atheism generally is considered a term that refers to the lack of a religion and an atheist is someone who doesn't believe in the existence of God. It might be said that such an individual also denies that the existence of God can be proven. What does biblical scripture say about beliefs like these?
An Atheist and a Fool
God's word says, "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God" (Psalm 14:1). This is one of numerous scriptures that cannot be labeled difficult to understand nor does it lend itself to various "interpretations." It is plain and clear that God's word refers to the one who denies the existence of God, an atheist in other words, as a fool. Therefore, it's perfectly logical to conclude that atheism is foolishness. This is not a man's opinion, this is the word of God.
Someone might ask, "Why believe what the word of God says about atheism when the Bible itself is foolishness?" Christians should understand why some people honestly don't believe how any intelligent person can accept the scriptures of the Christian Bible as truth. Was there really a garden of Eden with a serpent that could talk? Was Jonah really swallowed by a miraculous fish created by God? Is it sensible to think that he survived such an ordeal? Who can prove that there's a God who actually performed signs and wonders through Moses as they are recorded in the Bible?
The Atheist, the Unbeliever and the Christian Believer
Much scientific research, many discoveries, and archaeological findings have put the arguments against the veracity and infallibility of God's word to shame. This is why belief in evolution is steadily waning. Nevertheless, the truth is that an atheist is not simply someone who doesn't believe in God's word. There are many non-Christians, also called unbelievers, who don't believe that the "stories" or the teachings of the Bible should be taken seriously. However, very few of these people embrace atheism. The important difference is that they don't deny the existence of God, which sets them far apart from being a fool according to Psalm 14:1.
If you are atheist, because you do not see the goodness of God in this terrible world, you are probably not a true atheist. You are probably closer to being an agnostic. In any event, it is NOT our intention to be offensive. No. We are simply differentiating the foolishness of the denial of the existence of God and the legitimate questions that we have about life. Share your thoughts on this, and begin learning what might surprise you.
