Hearing God's Calling for Christian Ministry
God's Calling on the Life of the Apostle Peter for Christian Ministry
The apostle Peter wrote, "But, contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)" (KJV, Galatians 2:7-8). These words teach us that God's calling on the life of the apostle Peter was for him to do Christian ministry among Israel, also referred to in scripture as the "natural branches" and the "circumcision." They also teach us that Paul, on the other hand, was given a Christian ministry among the Gentiles, also called the "nations" and the "heathen" in scripture.
There's a very important message in that brief biblical passage that reminds us that God's calling for Christian ministry is not always what believers think it should or will be. For example, if someone is saved from a life of crime and a vicious cycle of returning to prison, many believers are swift to think that he or she will have a Christian ministry among repeat offenders, among those who are serving a prison sentence or with those who are on their way to prison, when considering their lifestyle. While God's calling to Christian ministry certainly can be one that sends the redeemed believer to lost souls of his or her same walk of life or of a similar past, this is not always the case. Therefore, it's important not to automatically encourage a believer to seek to do Christian ministry among those with whom one would think he or she would best work. Why? Simply because this might be the will and calling of man, not of God.
The apostle Paul was "...of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee, concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching righteousness which is in the law, blameless" (Philippians 3:5-6). Speaking from a logical and natural point of view, who would be better than Paul to be used to minister to the Jews the glory of Christ, their Messiah? Nevertheless, God's calling on Paul's life for Christian ministry did not send him to Israel, it sent him to the Gentiles. Believers, including "babes in Christ," certainly should be encouraged to seek God's calling on their life for Christian ministry; however, they should not be "pushed" into a ministry into which God has not and is not calling them because this not walking in the Spirit, rather it's walking in the logic that's associated with the natural mind.
A new believer who is stirred to do Christian ministry among a group of people who seem unlikely to reap benefit from his or her Christian service to them should not necessarily be discouraged to proceed. All believers are reminded that, "...it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings" (Philippians 2:13-14).
