When I first started writing online, I was eager to share helpful and valuable information with others around the world--knowledge that I had been grateful to acquire and put into practice. I also wanted to help promote a website on a "shoe string" budget and had read that writing articles for article directories was the best way to promote a business, cause, organization, or web site free of charge. I read articles that really praised what the author called a "win-win" situation when providing content for article directories. The authors who gave such advice emphasized the importance of back links to your web site that you could provide in your by-line. They explained that back links were the author's "pay" for providing material free of charge. It sounded like a good plan to me so I began concentrating on writing for the top ranked article directories, following the advice in those articles.
Although I knew I wanted to earn money writing online, I also knew I wasn't an established writer yet; so, I was content with gaining skill through practice. However, If I could live that time over again, I would do some things differently. I can't say that the decision to write for article directories was a total waste because it wasn't. Nevertheless, I wish I had stopped providing content in exchange for a "pay" of back links long before I did. First, the positive side is that I really got a chance to refine my writing skill and build up some confidence. I earned platinum status at EzineArticles.com after my first ten articles. Later, I applied for an author account at the prestigious Buzzle.com and was approved. My articles were rated four and five stars at Amazines.com among other top ranked article directories. I also completed an English Composition I course during my college training in Web Development. All of this experience gave me the chance to refine my writing skill and paved the way for my very first paid freelance writing job paying $250.00 through Elance.com.
I've now made close to $4,000.00 as a less than part-time freelance writer who receives upfront pay under contract with professional sites such as WiseGEEK.com, BrightHub.com, the former AssociatedContent.com (featured contributor-Yahoo!), DailyArticle.com, and others as well as private clients. I don't recommend writing for BrightHub.com anymore. Some of the editors are impossible to work with and their policy of "refreshing" stale articles is completely to their advantage. This would never have happened had I not taken the advice I read later in other articles that, in my opinion, did a very good job of pointing out that to continue writing for article directories for zero pay is nothing short of a "rip-off." While back links are valuable, you can get back links plus upfront and/or residual pay by writing for sites that offer the chance of at least some monetary compensation for your content.
In conclusion, I agree with the recommendation of the authors of those articles that I read later that convinced me to cease providing free content for article directories that offer no upfront payment, no performance pay based on page views, nor any revenue sharing. That's not a win-win situation; it's a win-lose one with the article directory owners winning and the authors losing, at least that's my opinion--and my experience.
