Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Although there are many products for clearing up skin problems such as acne, there are still millions of people who continue to suffer from break-outs, discoloration, dryness, and rough patches. While it's true that certain foods such as tomatoes, sugar and chocolate, cause and aggravate the skin, some have continued to have problems even after eliminating the supposed culprits. What can be done when skin problems persist even after adopting a much healthier diet?
The truth is that sometimes the skin just needs some extra help. This is where herbal teas that are also medicinal can and have proven to be very beneficial and may even be the last missing step to achieving smooth, even-toned, and healthy skin. What are these herbs? Most books on the subject of medicinal plants will present a long list of herbs that are good for the skin. Nevertheless, not all of them work the same for everyone and some of them are not safe enough to be drank on any regular basis. There are two herbs, however, that have produced wonderful and consistent results.
The first herb is commonly known as Burdock. It's a root from which a decoction instead of an infusion must be made. A decoction involves simmering a teaspoon of the herb in eight to ten ounces of water for a minimum of twenty minutes. The tea may then be sweetened with a natural sweetener such as honey, pure evaporated cane juice, brown sugar or stevia extract. Burdock has no known toxicity so a cup may be drank daily without worry. Results are usually noticed within three days of drinking a cup per day. Care must continue to be given to avoid foods and substances that are known to irritate the skin. The wonderful news about drinking burdock for healthy skin is that this herb and food offers so much more. It's a blood cleanser that supplies the blood with much needed nutrients such as silicon and iron and is a time tested all natural remedy against arthritis. Burdock is also very beneficial for maintaining healthy kidneys (Michael Tierra, C.A.,N.D., The Way of Herbs [New York, NY: Pocket Books, 1989], 112).
The second herb is commonly known as Gotu Kola which is a medicinal plant native to tropical and semi-tropical countries. The leaves are used from which an infusion is made. An infusion simply involves steeping a teaspoon of the herb in very hot water for at least three minutes. Just as decoctions may be sweetened with natural sugars, so infusions may also be sweetened to taste. It's recommended to drink just a half cup of Gotu Kola infusion three times daily for no longer than one month after which a period of rest of at least three weeks should follow.
Why is Burdock prepared as a decoction but Gotu Kola as an infusion? In the case of Burdock, the root of the plant is the part that's used. Simmering is required to extract nutrients and medicinal substances from hard substances such as plant roots. An infusion is sufficient for softer parts of an herb such as the leaves in the case of Gotu Kola.
Both herbs, Burdock and Gotu Kola, may be purchased from a health food store. It is very important, however, that only the bulk herb be used. Sales people will often attempt to persuade customers to purchase costly herbal blends containing the herbs they request. If that doesn't work, they tend to resort to suggestions to buy the herb in other forms such as pills, capsules or tinctures. There are usually two reasons for this; they don't have the bulk herb in stock and they always prefer to sell much more expensive forms of herbal medicines to raise their profits.
It should be remembered that health food stores are for-profit business which may not have any more interest in promoting all natural foods and medicines than any other business. It should also be remembered that the medicinal plants and foods that God made abundantly available in the earth for man's health and cure of sickness and diseases are very powerful, free or economical, and carry none of the dangerous side effects of man's chemical "medicines."
