Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Even the most health conscious person will get sick sometimes especially when there's a widespread outbreak of sickness such as the dreaded H1N1 flu. However, natural medicines are still there to help heal man from what ails him. I speak from personal experience which includes my own 100% natural recovery from bronchitis at one point in my life and pneumonia at another. Did I truly have those conditions? Yes, I was medically diagnosed with bronchitis and prescribed the drug Sulfameth. I had the prescription filled because I was afraid that all natural medicine might fail. Having a history of suffering from severe asthma attacks requiring hospitalization, I didn't want to be without the prescription. Nevertheless, I did not have to take even one pill nor did I use any over-the-counter medications.
I also witnessed the totally natural cure of cancer of one of my closest relatives who didn't receive even 1 treatment of deadly chemotherapy. Does this mean I'm suggesting reliance on natural medicine for everyone? No, because most people are not willing to do all that's required to recover from illness and if that illness is serious, their carelessness could prove fatal.
Natural healing doesn't consist of the simple taking of an all natural medicine and waiting for everything to be okay. Prevention of the flu doesn't lie in getting the flu shot. Medical doctors speak of the body's amazing capacity to heal itself if it's not abused. What a person does to his body is just as important as what he doesn't do. So, whether a person chooses to fight the flu with chemical or all natural medicines, there are things he should not do while trying to recover. First, there should be concern for the health of the immune system, God's built-in protection. It's the first line of defense against the flu and anything else.
Avoid Foods That Lower Immunity
According to the article, "The Immune System: Part I" by Christine Cox, certain foods and drinks severely hinder the immune system. This is the last thing that should be done when trying to recuperate from the flu or any sickness or disease. Ms. Cox warns that, "Alcohol ingestion has been shown to severely depress neutrophils, cells that "eat" and destroy bacteria and tumor cells." You may have not decided to give up alcoholic beverages permanently, however, refraining from them while recovering from the flu is the part you can do to help your immunity.
It's also recommended to greatly reduce fat intake. This is something that many Americans would benefit from whether they're fighting the flu or not, but this is particularly when already sick. Is this really all that important? I would say it is after reading that, "One study conducted at the University of Massachusetts showed that reducing fat from 32 to 23% of the diet boosted natural killer cell activity by 48%" (The Immune System)!
Large amounts of sweets are consumed daily in America. Soda pops, candy, cookies, donuts, chips, kool-aid, cake, and brownies figure among the sugar-laden and nutritionally depleted "foods" filling the shelves of grocery stores across the country. "Sugar and other sweets have been shown to reduce the ability of certain white blood cells to destroy bacteria" (The Immune System). Although it's true that even fruit sugar can cause similar behavior, it shouldn't be avoided. Fruits and their sugar are totally natural and can't be compared to "foods" such as a soft drink. It's common knowledge that fruits contain vital nutrients including vitamin C and flavonoids. What nutrition does a soda pop contain? In fact, habitual drinking of sweetened carbonated drinks has been linked to a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer (Ben Kage). Nothing associated with increasing pancreatic cancer should be ingested during a bout with the flu.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are not just foods; they're also medicine and should be freely consumed (although not together) when fighting the flu. Neither natural nor chemical antibiotics are meant to take the place of the immune system and the need to treat it with respect.
Christian Food for Thought:
...I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health even as thy soul prospereth (III John 2).
Far too few Christians embrace the truth that they cannot simply pray sickness and disease away that has and is being caused by improper diet and an unhealthy lifestyle. More on divine healing.
