Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Just what is feng shui? It's only one of several philosophies, doctrines, and practices that have been embraced by many who were born and still live in Western nations. They are often inexplicably fascinated with anything that sounds new and different from what they've been exposed to most of their lives. In addition to their understandable driving desire to attain happiness in life, there also tends to be an attraction to what sounds like profound revelations of invisible forces that affect man. Happiness is almost always measured by one's financial prosperity as well as the existence of a fairy-tale-like romance in his life. It's no wonder that these are the topics most heavily mentioned by promoters of the practice of feng shui--especially if the promoter sells books, jewelry and consultation services relating to this "art."
What about the testimonials of success stories of those who've given feng shui a try? Experienced freelance writers, copy-writers in particular, know all too well of the common practice of promoters to contract writers to provide well written testimonials in order to sell their products or services. While not all testimonials praising products and services are false, many of them are. This deception can be combated in various ways. First, the simple realization that many testimonials are false, having been conceived and written by hired writers, helps consumers to keep up their guard. Not all endorsements or ratings of products and services can be trusted as genuine. Second, it's most important to avoid becoming obsessed with desire which can and often does stifle the working of even common sense.
But, exactly what is feng shui? Among the basic principles of feng shui is the teaching that each person has an energy force within him which is usually referred to as "chi," sometimes spelled "qi" and that there are positive and negative energies that circulate in the world, affecting his chi. This would then signify that man actually interacts and is affected by the environment in which he lives. While it's true that a person's environment can and does affect his mood, mind and spirit, this fact is often stretched far beyond its scope to suggest man's ability to manipulate universal forces to achieve specific goals in life.
One attempt to validate the practice of feng shui includes citing the results of scientific investigation that supposedly uncovered the practice of feng shui among cavemen. The research revealed that the cave dwellers chose to live in caves that were located close to sources of water and that had an entrance that allowed them to see the land and area surrounding the cave. How does this use of common sense in choosing a dwelling place have anything to do with answering the question, "What is feng shui?" Ancient peoples made many decisions conducive to their very survival in a harsh world. It is only logical that cavemen would have chosen caves close to water and with entrances allowing them to see what danger lurked outside before they exited the shelter.
There are many problems and unanswered questions associated with believing that there's any real and lasting benefit from practicing feng shui. If energies and life forces can be so easily controlled, why don't more people fix the problems in their life by attracting positive forces to themselves while repelling and dodging negative ones? What does a person do when his work place hasn't been "harmonized" and "fixed" by the principles of feng shui? Will the positive energy he's attracted to himself in his home help him against the imbalance and negativity of his work environment? Could all of the homes and also entire nations, one by one, practice feng shui and eventually attain world peace by harmonizing everyone's chi energy with the life forces that float around the planet? If this is possible, why can't energies be stirred up and directed to every individual, home, work place, and nation to control minds into practicing feng shui for international harmony, peace, happiness, joy, and prosperity? Feng shui is based on the fallacies of Chinese yin and yang and is practiced by many of the poorest people and many of the most unhappy (whether rich or not) people in the world.
What is feng shui? Many people have now come to define it in simple terms--false hope. It might sound promising at first glance, however, closer examination reveals it as a system of principles upon which man simply cannot rely. Further investigation will reveal that the terms "chi," "energy," and "force" breed deception regarding the entities to which they really refer, entities which provide a temporary and false peace.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
