Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Popular proverbs and sayings have been received and passed from generation to generation for centuries. They are, in reality, the sum of man's education in the unmerciful school of life. They offer simple counsel, instruction, and warning often of more value than sessions with a psychologist. Nevertheless, there are some popular proverbs and sayings that are not always true or reliable. Does this mean they should be discarded? No, but, they should be followed with caution and only after studying the situation to which they are being applied.
It's often said that, "What you don't know won't harm you". This saying is not always good advice from a secular and Christian perspective. Whether a child understands the danger of fire, wild animals, germs, or guns he can still be burned, bitten, fall sick or killed by these things. Should this saying be strictly applied to the knowledge of abstract things? The answer is again negative when considering biblical scripture such as Hosea 4:6 where it's recorded that God said, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge...."
It has been repeated down through history that, "The end justifies the means". However, this is also not always true nor is it always good counsel to follow. The New Testament scripture of II Timothy 2:5 warns, "And if a man also strive for masteries yet is he not crowned except he strive lawfully." The paraphrased Bible "translates" this passage to read, "Follow the Lord's rules for doing his work, just as an athlete either follows the rules or is disqualified and wins no prize."
Another very popular saying is, "Follow your heart." People are often advised in this manner when facing decisions in life. The Bible forcefully warns against following such advice when not in fellowship with Christ because, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (KJV Proverbs 14:12). The Christian Bible also says that, "The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it" (Proverbs 17:9)? This is why even the believer in Jesus is advised by God's word that tells him, "In all thy ways acknowledge him (God), and he shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:6).
Proverbs and sayings are good teachers. They are a source of free advice and guidance, but some of them are not without flaw. God's servants, like anyone else, sometimes experience confusion in their lives, but those who love Jesus can rest assured by faith that, "...All things work together for good to them that love God..." (Rom. 8:28).
