Secular Life Coaching Compared to Christian Life Coaching
Have you ever asked yourself, "What is secular life coaching and how is it similar to or different from Christian life coaching?" More and more people are asking this question as they seek guidance and advice to help them achieve their personal and professional goals in a world growing ever more complicated. It's essential to understand how counseling, secular, and Christian life coaching are different.
What Life Coaching Is and What It Is Not
Life coaching neither involves counseling someone nor giving advice; life coaching does not involve psycho-analyzing a person's present life or his or her past to uncover hidden fears, secrets, traumatic events, personality disorders or physical health problems that might need a referral to a psychiatrist or other specialist. A life coach doesn't have patients like a psychologist or psychiatrist has; rather he or she has clients who might or might not be seeing a psychologist while also being coached.
The purpose of life coaching is to help you achieve your personal and professional goals in life. Again, a life coach refrains from giving advice but makes suggestions instead. For example, let's say that someone who wants to make a career change is uncertain about how to continue earning a living and keeping up with family responsibilities while preparing to change careers. The uncertainty and stress of life can and often does easily lead to despondency and a lack of motivation. (Keep in mind, however, that a life coach is not a "personal" motivational speaker.) Life coaching for such a person would not consist of advising him or her to attend a certain school for training nor of dissuading from pursuing the career change altogether. The coach would make suggestions regarding options that the client might not see, suggestions for how to overcome obstacles, assistance in setting and meeting reasonable short-term goals on the road to the long-term goal, and he or she would also provide encouragement. These are just some of the services that could be provided.
Christian Life Coaching
Secular and Christian life coaching differ in several aspects. Most secular life coaches operate around the principle that the strength, strategy, and answers to how to achieve personal and professional goals in life lie in each person, who, through coaching, learn how to pull answers, devise strategies, and muster up the strength needed to succeed. The Christian life coach, on the other hand, realizes that not all answers, strength, or strategies are found within the client. The apostle Paul said, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (KJV, Philippians 4:13). Paul knew that "his" strength did not lie within him, but rather within Christ. This doesn't imply that Christian life coaching encourages you to sit and do nothing; on the contrary, you are encouraged to fully cooperate with God for those things that are in agreement with his perfect will. Scripture reminds the believer that faith without works (action) is dead (James 2:17). The Christian life coach also realizes that the goal and duty of every true Christian is to do the will of Jesus around which everything else revolves and depends (Matthew 7:21).
