Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
"God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations. I do set my bow in the cloud over the earth... And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh... And I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth." (Genesis 9:11-16)
The bow is the rainbow. A covenant is a promise. The rainbow is, therefore, a reminder of God's promise to all living creatures never again to destroy the earth by flood waters. Has this promise been kept?
First, let's point out that every nation and tribe on earth knows that a worldwide flood took place that destroyed all life except for a few people, and male-female pairs of animals. These cultures had no access to the biblical book of Genesis from which to copy the story. What's even more important is that scientists teach that there are five conditions that had to have been met for the many dinosaur tracks--a type of fossil--to have been made. Only the type of worldwide flood described in the biblical book of Genesis is capable of giving rise to all five factors, which must be met in order to produce the dinosaur track fossils.
We have cultural and scientific proof that the Great Deluge actually took place. How interesting it is that those five conditions have never reoccurred. Translation: There has never been another worldwide flood. Why? Simply because God promised He would never again destroy man and beast through a worldwide flood. The rainbow is the sign of His covenant with man and animals. A covenant He has never broken.
The same God who kept His promise never again to destroy Earth by worldwide flooding also promises to avenge every wrong that is not forgiven by God through Christ. But even if we repent, we will NOT escape reaping what we have sown (Galatians 6:7). The world is full of injustice, cruelty, abominations, idolatry, unspeakable horrors and suffering. Where is God? Does He really see? Does He care? Is He really mighty enough to ever rescue Earth?
Considering the undeniable evidence that there was a worldwide flood, we might ask, "But did God bring it? Or did it occur on its own?" Well, if God did not have the power to bring a worldwide flood, how would He have the authority to say it will never happen again? Such a decision would not be His, but rather that of the "forces" that brought the flood. The problem is that neutral "forces" of nature cannot make promises. The sun cannot promise it will not burn. The wind cannot promise it will not knock us down. Water cannot promise it will not flood us. The non-thinking elements cannot make promises at all. Only an intelligent, and all-powerful being can promise to do--or not to do--something. There just is no way around these truths. So, what does the same God who promised not to ever destroy Earth with a flood again say about the evil that runs rampant on the planet?
Babylon, although it was a real empire, is also a symbol of the abominations of the earth (Revelation 17:5). And she has caused great suffering among innocent people. Revelation, chapter 18 is just one place where we read of what awaits her. She has tormented the followers of Christ as well as countless victims who were helpless, and did not deserve the suffering she inflicted on them. And though it seemed that God paid no attention, we read, "For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and DOUBLE unto her double according to her works. In the cup which she hath filled, fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her... Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine. And she shall be utterly burned with fire. For strong is the Lord God who judgeth her." (Revelation 18:5-8).
Now someone might argue that this, and other passages speaking of God's coming wrath against the wicked, are not express promises like the covenant represented by the rainbow is. We see the quick destruction of that argument in the fact that the passages speaking of God's coming wrath are just as much His Word as is Genesis. And what does God say about His Word as a whole? He says, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." (Luke 21:33)
This is why we also read, "God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man, that he should repent. Hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?" (Numbers 23:19)
Can we trust God to keep His promises? We have our answer. A visible one we can prove. God said He would never again destroy Earth by worldwide flooding. And since He made that promise, Earth has not seen another worldwide flood. A fulfilled promise of God symbolized by the rainbow. God Himself looks at His rainbow, and remembers His promise to us (Gen. 9:16). We can also look at the rainbow, not only as a reminder that God promised never to bring another worldwide flood, but also as a reminder that He keeps all His promises, not just the one concerning the flood. Yes. We can fully trust the promises of God who is literally incapable of lying (Titus 1:2).
