Hopeless Soul: If You Only Knew

knelt.jpg

Hopeless soul, if you are taking the time to read this, you are not yet totally defeated. Somewhere in your being, you are still clinging to hope, though it be only a dim ray. But that dim ray of hope is all you need to take action now...today. Who can withstand the rest of his life facing despair? Haunted by past trauma? Even physical injuries caused by that trauma?

The Bible records king David's expression of the need to receive some good things in this present life. Though he was a servant of God, and looked forward to spending eternity in the presence of God, he could not bare to think that his earthly life would be nothing but misery. He said, "I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." (Psalm 27:13)

Before you even continue reading this, it's imperative that you focus on only one thing right now: God's help. God's rescue. The healing that only Christ can grant. Don't let any other questions invade your mind except how to get what you need from the Lord. The question of whether the Lord wants to help you has already been answered by God Himself.

Christ's work on Earth did NOT end when He rose from the dead, and returned to heaven. In heaven, He continues--and will continue--to do what He was sent to do on Earth, until the end. Christ said, "...He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." (Luke 4:18)

But how do you get Christ to do these things for you? How do you pray? Where do you go? First and foremost, make sure you call on the Christ that God sent, because the Bible warns that there are false Christs and false prophets (Mat. 24:24). The true Lord Jesus is God the Son. To deny His divinity is to deny your salvation, which is why 1 John 4:3, says, "Every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God. And this is that spirit of anti-Christ."

Man is composed of a mind (soul), body and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Therefore he is a spirit that can confess whether he believes Jesus came in the flesh or not. Now if Jesus had been a mere mortal, there would be no need to confess belief that He came in the flesh. All mortals come to Earth in the flesh. Jesus said no one comes to the Father except through Him (St. John 14:6). And He is clearly identified in Scripture as God who came in the flesh (St. John 1:1, 14). If we reject that very specific identity, we reject Him, and thus our salvation (Acts 4:12).

Clamor To The Father In Jesus' Name

While one should be able to go to a local church that is truly Christian, and find support in coming to Christ, the sad reality is that you might not have that option. But Christ is not limited to a church. He is not summoned through printed prayers. He is not contacted through a priest. He responds to our personal clamor to God the Father in His name. (St. John 13:14)

But how do you talk to God? What do you say? In your own words, you acknowledge that you need Him. That He's your only hope. That you want Him in your life. Even perhaps that you need His help with your prayer to Him. Forget about fancy words. That is not what moves God (Mat. 6:7).

Now why would anyone tell God things He already knows? Because we need to build a relationship with the Lord. In this, we show that we believe He is listening, and cares. This is important, because "...he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)

Even if you are so upset that your words simply don't form correctly, remember that God knows our thoughts, weaknesses, anger and bitterness of soul. Some people could only cry "Jesus!" when they first approached the throne of God. It is a start. Battle. You might be physically alone, but God is close, because He knows what's going on (Psalm 34:18). And, He has servants who are praying for you. We are among those servants. You might be nameless and faceless to us. But we know you are an individual with a name, a face, worth, and a purpose in life. We are battling in Christ with you.

If You Only Knew

While on Earth, Jesus spoke with a Samaritan woman at a well about water that only He could give her that would satisfy her thirst (St. John, 6th chapter). The woman, however, did not realize that Christ was NOT referring to a natural thirst, but rather to her spiritual thirst in life, which only He could satisfy. The woman should have suspected that Christ was not referring to natural water, because He tells her He can give her "living water" (verse 10). Who calls regular water "living water"? Now, it could be that this spiritually thirsty woman had lost all hope for a normal, fulfilled life. Hopelessness can cloud understanding. What is apparent is that she does not know what Christ CAN and WANTS to do for her. If she had known, she would have asked Him for that living water, and He would have granted her request. This is why Jesus said to her, "If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water." (St. John 4:10)

In other words, Jesus is saying, "If you only knew what I CAN and WILL do for you, you would ask me. And I would grant it." You now know who that living water is, and what He wants to do for you. But you must ask.

The Third Man by Angela Sheffield Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
