Wrong Assumptions Can Prove Fatal
It's probably safe to say we've all misread the good intentions of others at times, and that others have misread our good intentions. Unfortunately, misreading good intentions will not be completely eliminated, for various reasons. Safety for example. We're trying to stay safe in an extremely cruel world. So, we have to be cautious. But God's Word speaks to us regarding the grave consequences of taking things too far when we misread someone's good actions. In Second Samuel, chapter 10, we read, "It came to pass after this that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead. Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father? That he hath sent comforters unto thee? Hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it? Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away."
So Hanun is persuaded by his princes to respond to David's good intentions by shaming his servants. Of course, David is justifiably angry. But he doesn't attack. However, knowing that David is angry, they call up troops for war against David. Hearing this, David is now ready for war. Misreading good intentions has sparked war.
Verse 18 says, "David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians and forty thousand horsemen and smote Shobach, the captain of their host, who died there."
Now, we know God was with David's army, as verse 12 says Joab, of David's army, said of the battle, "Let the Lord do what is right in His eyes. Well, the Lord gave David's army a huge victory, which teaches us that God is not pleased when we unjustifiably misread someone's good actions toward us.
